Exfoliation – what is it and what is an exfoliator?

The most frequently asked questions is what is exfoliation?  Exfoliation is a process in which the surface-layer of dead skin cells are removed. The second most frequently asked questions is what is an exfoliator?  An exfoliator is a tool used to exfoliate skin.

Why should I exfoliate and what are the benefits?

Your skin does go through its own process of exfoliating; however, it always needs a little bit of help because of different skin types.  Manually exfoliating your skin removes dead skin cells and increases circulation.  The result is softer, smoother, healthier glowing skin.  It is especially good for oily skin because the oil clogs your pores which could cause acne blackheads.  If you get blackheads on your nose, you know what I’m talking about. For dry skin, your skin will tend to look dull without regular exfoliation.

In either case, because dead skin cells accumulate very fast, it inhibits the skins natural exfoliating ability and moisture absorption; it will also cause your skins natural exfoliation process to slow down or stop altogether.  Therefore, regular exfoliation practices will allow your skin to absorb more moisture, reduce fine lines from wrinkles, and decrease acne.  Knowing the benefits of exfoliating makes the top 3 in our Frequently Asked Questions list because it’s an important question!

How do I exfoliate my skin?

Always moisten first.  Using a circular motion, scrub the areas you want to exfoliate with your Nutt So Ruff scrub bar.  Take care around sensitive body parts.  Rinse thoroughly, then moisturize with your favorite moisturizer.

Pores and Acne

Large pores and acne are problematic for many people who don’t exfoliate.

How do you get blackheads – for example: nose blackheads?

A blackhead is an exposed comedo, which is a large opening in the skin. You often see blackheads on nose. The pore is open at the top and is dark in appearance. They can be either black or yellow in color. This isn’t dirt – it’s actually skin pigment. A black head is usually considered noninflammatory acne.

Many things can contribute to blackheads. For instance, if you put too many oils or lotions on your face or if you wear too much make up. This is because your pores can get clogged.  Further, if your skin produces a lot of oil, you may see a spike in the number of blackheads on your skin. Getting rid of blackheads isn’t that hard.

You must clean your skin regularly and correctly in order to keep these discolorations from forming on your skin. If you don’t clean your skin properly, dead skin cells can accumulate on your skin which will clog your pores. With oily skin, these dead skin cells have a hard time being removed naturally because the oil makes it sticky. Note that it is not the dirt but the oxidized oil that contributes to blackheads. Also be careful not to over cleanse the skin because you can irritate your skin.

What are pores?

What is pores is a common frequently asked questions…A pore is a very small hole throughout your skin that allows things like sweat to pass through it.

How to exfoliate at home and can I use the same exfoliator on different parts of my body?

Home exfoliation is easy. Follow these basic and easy steps:

  • Always moisten first.
  • Using a circular motion, scrub the areas you want to exfoliate with your Nutt So Ruff scrub bar.
    • Take care around sensitive body parts.
  • Rinse thoroughly, then moisturize with your favorite moisturizer.

Exfoliate at home and save time and money! And, exfoliate face at home and you’ll see great results in a matter of days!

You, unfortunately, cannot use the same exfoliator on different parts of the body because some areas of your body are more sensitive than others.  So, you’ll want to take care to use the proper abrasiveness on specific parts of the body.  For example, your face is much more sensitive than your back or legs so you’ll want to use a product that is specifically for your face.  We offer 3 different levels of abrasiveness:  only 14% abrasive for the face, very sensitive areas of the body or extremely dry skin; 20% for normal to oily skin; 25% abrasive for those rough areas of the feet.

How often should I exfoliate?

At least 1-2 times a week is recommended for facial exfoliation.  You should exfoliate the rest of your body at least 3 times a week.  A good rule of thumb is to exfoliate on the days you shave. Before you shave, exfoliate! This helps reduce ingrown hairs and gives you a better shave. Plus, you’ll have smoother skin.
This also depends on your skin type:

  • Dry or sensitive skin – once per week
  • Oily or combination skin – 3-5 times per week
  • Normal skin – everyday

Please note:  you should not exfoliate during an acne breakout because it can make the acne worse.  Instead, wait until the acne clears up before you start exfoliating.

What skin type do I have? How do you test for skin type?

If your skin flakes all day every day, you have dry skin. You may also notice dry patches of skin. Or, maybe you have dry skin on your cheeks but you have an oily shine on your forehead, nose and chin; if so, this is combination skin. Obviously, if you feel oily all over, you have oily skin. If you easily get redness and irritation, you have sensitive skin. And, if you have none of the above most of the time, you have normal skin – congratulations, you are one of the few!!! Regardless of your skin type we have the bar that’s right for you.

If you are still asking yourself, “What skin type do I have?”, there are simple tests you can do to test for skin type:

  1. Use a tissue and blot your face in several areas, looking at the tissue each time.
  2. If you blot your entire face and there are no spots on the tissue and your face feels dry, you have dry skin.
  3. If you blot your skin and you have oily spots on the tissue from your forehead, nose and chin – you have combination skin.
  4. But, if you only have a small amount of oil, in these areas, you probably have normal skin.

What to do about oily skin?

The most important thing to know is that you do not want to dry out your skin. The best thing to do is to cleanse it but don’t over cleanse it. Wash away the oils and dirt but don’t try to dry it out with alcohol or an excessive amount of Benzoyl Peroxide products. Doing this will only cause your skin to produce more oil. You’ll be amazed at how your skin will balance itself out if you don’t try as hard to dry it out. Now you know what to do for oily skin!

Our Face Scrub bar is perfect for oily skin.

What does dry, red skin mean?

Dry red skin is usually a symptom of irritated or over-dried skin. Either a product with fragrance or alcohol was used or too much benzoyl peroxide was used. Try using a cleanser that has no fragrance and no alcohol. And, if you use anything that has benzoyl peroxide in it, don’t overdo it.

Do any exclusions apply to any of our coupons?

Yes, some of our coupons are only good for certain bars.  For example, our “2off” coupon can only be used on our scrub bars.

Who exfoliates?

This is a huge frequently asked questions because exfoliating is just coming back as in our skin care arsenal.  In past years, women were the only ones who were taking extra care of their skin by exfoliating.  Recently, though, more and more men and teens understand the benefits of regular exfoliation.

Exfoliation tips:

When exfoliating your face, take care not to scrub too hard.  The skin on your face is more sensitive than other parts of your body, so be gentle.   Our natural face scrub for sensitive skin is perfect if this is the skin type you have.

And, always, always remember to moisturize after you exfoliate!!

Tree Nuts vs. Peanuts:

As our name suggests, Nutt So Ruff, uses nuts in our products (along with oats which are very gentle and soothing to the skin).  However, we only use tree nuts and they are ground so finely, they are like a powder which makes our bars very effective.  We never use peanuts which are actually a legume.
