How to make your own almond milk

Have you ever wondered how to make your own almond milk?  If you love almond milk, making your own is not only healthier but actually quite easy.

Milk, what’s your favorite?

Are you a milk lover like me?  There are so many different versions of milk and most of you probably started with regular cow’s milk.  Some people love it and some people despise it.  I was always one who loved it.  I remember as a kid, I loved milk – especially chocolate milk.  I suppose that wasn’t too unusual since chocolate milk is loaded with sugar and chocolate (well, maybe not real chocolate but I still loved it anyway!).

When cow’s milk started to get a bad rap due to all the hormones in it, people switched to nut milks.  The most common nut milks are:

  • Almond milk
  • Cashew milk

But, there’s also:

  • Hemp milk
  • Coconut milk
  • Rice milk
  • Soy milk

I still love regular cow’s milk but I am also partial to almond milk.  Most of us buy our milk from the local grocery store but have you ever wondered how to make your own almond milk – or any other milk?

Almonds, your new favorite nut!

It’s obvious that I love almonds.  Almonds are a tree nut and they are so good for you.  With all the vitamin E and antioxidants, it can really help your skin glow.  If you suffer from migraines, the magnesium in almonds can help alleviate that problem.  I bet you didn’t know about these almond benefits!  But, that’s not all.  They’re also good for:

  • Gut health (especially great if you suffer from leaky gut)
  • And added source of iron
  • Getting more folate in your diet
  • Maintaining blood sugar
  • Help with anti-aging

How to make your own almond milk

Now, on to making your own almond milk.  Maybe you feel this would be too much of a hassle but I can tell you that it really isn’t that hard.  All it takes is some almonds, water, and a good blender.  You’ll need a ratio of 1:2 (almonds : water) which means that if you use 1 cup of almonds, use 2 cups of water.

Steps:

  1. Soak almonds for about 24 hours, covered on the counter or refrigerate.
  2. Drain and give a good rinse.
  3. Add the drained almonds to your blender and add the water.  Again, if you used 1 cup of almonds, use 2 cups of water.
  4. Pulse a few times, then blend for about 2 minutes on the highest speed.
  5. Take a mesh strainer and some cheesecloth and place over a deep bowl with lip – something like a large mixing bowl or measuring cup.  Pour in the almond mixture to drain.
  6. Squeeze the cheese cloth to get every last drop of almond milk out.

And, that’s it!  You should consume your almond milk within 24 -48 hours – keeping in the fridge until you can consume the rest.  Plus, you can use the pulp in other smoothies or better yet, in your oatmeal for breakfast!  It’s that easy!

Another good thing is that now you’ll know how many almonds are actually in your almond milk.  Commercial almond milk doesn’t really have that many almonds.
