How often should you give yourself a pedicure

How often should you give yourself a pedicure if you want amazing looking feet?  There are a few things you should know.

What is a pedicure?

A pedicure is a procedure commonly done in a salon that focuses on the feet and lower leg.  It involves soaking your feet for a certain period of time, callus removal (often using a very abrasive material), toenail polish removal and subsequent application, and a massage of the legs and feet.

Benefits of a pedicure, with some downsides

I love pedicures because it allows you time to just sit and relax.  There’s no running around getting things done.  The time is all about you.  It’s wonderful.

The downsides of getting a spa pedicure are the following:

  1. Cost – often, the price of a professional pedicure is very pricey.  Add on a 20% tip and you really have to plan for this.
  2. Sanitation / Cleanliness – most professional salons are going to take great steps to be clean so this is good news.  I did; however, once have an experience at a salon where they ‘nicked’ my skin by my toenail and I did get an infection.  I know it was an accident but needless to say, I never went back to that salon.
  3. Time – it does take time to get a pedicure.  There’s travel time, waiting time, and then the actual amount of time for the pedicure.  When you plan on making a day for it, it’s great.  But, I know we don’t always have that luxury!

How often should you give yourself a pedicure

Giving yourself a pedicure and how often you should give yourself one will depend on a few things:

  • How do you treat your feet?  Do you wear high heels or walk outside barefoot?  If so, you will need to get a pedicure more often and this is because both of these activities put pressure or friction on your feet.  This is what causes calluses to form.  The more you do this, the more often you’ll need a pedicure.
  • Personal preference – obviously we all like to be pampered and what better way to do this than sitting down for a relaxing treatment.
  • Upcoming event – if you have an event coming up and want to wear strappy sandals, then how often should you give yourself a pedicure will depend on how soon the event is coming up.  If your feet have tough calluses, you’ll need to start as early as possible.

Thick calluses on your heels mean your feet need attention.  If you haven’t had a pedicure in a while, you’ll need to spend a bit more time initially.  The good news is that you’ll start seeing the results almost immediately – even after the first exfoliation you do.  So, it’s never too early to start.

Plus, with flip flop season coming up, you’ll want to evaluate your feet now!  Actually, you probably should start in March / April time frame.

Conclusion

It all is a matter of personal preference on how often you should give yourself a pedicure, but it is a great thing to do.  Not only do you feel better after doing it because you’re giving yourself the time to sit and relax but you also look better.  When you look better, you feel even better – actually, you feel amazing.  Plus, calluses can be painful.  Sure, calluses form on our feet to protect them.

If you have thick dead skin on your feet, or are an avid runner (runners get calluses all the time), you know that the extra rubbing is uncomfortable.  This is why it is good maintenance for our bodies to make sure our feet are in tip top shape!  So, how often should you give yourself a pedicure?  Once a month is fine but you could also do it once a week.  If you can only do once every two weeks, do it!
