Sugar and wrinkles
Acne and sugar intake has been widely debated but if you’ve ever wondered about the Sugar and wrinkles connection, I’ll set the story straight right now!
Sugar and acne connection
What foods cause acne? First, let’s talk about the sugar and acne debate. When I was a teenager, my mom told me not to eat a lot of sugar because it would make my skin breakout. Sure enough, I had breakouts, but I didn’t want to believe that it was from the sugar (or any other food I was eating for that matter). And it’s true – we don’t want to believe it because we want to think that we can eat anything. The ‘it won’t happen to me’ syndrome. If you notice that you break out more than normal after eating lots of sugar, you know the answer.
So, Mom was right, but do you know why?
Sugar and wrinkles
It can be summed up like this:
Sugar + Collagen issues = Acne and Wrinkles
This is where sugar and wrinkles come in!

What? Basically, what this means is that the sugar we consume sticks to the proteins and fat swirling around and this byproduct is a problem for our collagen. This is why I call it a collagen issue because it causes problems for our bodies being able to make collagen. Collagen is so important for how our skin looks and feels.
When we eat too much sugar, those collagen issues give us wrinkles. Not only that, but it’s a problem for our insulin, which causes inflammation. It can also cause dehydration. Ugh! I hate to keep piling on but it also causes toxins to accumulate in your body so all those dead skin cells can’t slough off naturally, causing more breakouts. That’s partly why you need to see benefits from exfoliating regularly.
Conclusion
I know we may hate to admit others were right but now that you have the whole story, you’ll be able to make your own decisions about how much sugar you are putting into your body. Still don’t believe me (or Mom)? Do you need more proof? Read this article from the Huffington Post.
Why Sugar Is Just As Bad For Your Skin As It Is For Your Waistline | HuffPost Life

So…If you want to stop the cycle of breakouts and other skin problems like wrinkles, it’s time to skip the sugar. Here’s how I would start:
- Stop eating processed foods – they are loaded in sugar (and sodium) – this includes fast foods, frozen foods and prepared cakes.
- Cut down on alcohol – you don’t need to have a drink every day. Have no more than 3 drinks per week.
- Make sure you get an adequate about of vitamins.
- Do a detox at home.
Good luck – I know you can do it, because I did. Small incremental steps help you uncover your beautiful skin!
