Suffering from acne is difficult, especially when it means you have to eliminate foods you love. Is there really a sugar acne connection?

First, let’s talk about acne. No matter what age you experience acne, it’s devastating. Noone wants to have blemishes on their skin – it’s embarrassing and our self-worth decreases.

Teenagers are especially susceptible to the effects of acne but even adults struggle with self-esteem issues. When acne is involved, you tend to withdraw from social situations for fear of being judged or ridiculed. This is especially true if you were a victim of this bullying when you were younger.

In order to alleviate this, it’s important to look at the causes of acne and how it can be controlled or managed. That way, your self-esteem stays intact, and you can go out confidently into the world.

So, is there a sugar acne connection?
The connection between sugar and acne has always been a big topic. In reality, there is a lot that is involved in why acne forms.

When we consume any type of sugar, insulin is sent into the blood stream. The more sugar eaten, the more insulin is sent in. This is what causes inflammation. Inflammation is what you want to avoid because it can cause your skin to make more oil, causing more acne. So, there’s the connection. As colorful and as beautiful as the candy may be, there is a sugar acne connection.

Even though we’d like to believe that sugar isn’t the culprit, there is so much going on in your body when you eat sugar and that is what is causing your breakouts.
When your parents or doctors tell you to limit your sugar and drink plenty of water, do it. That way, your teen years can be almost blemish free and when you get to adulthood, you won’t have to worry about your self-worth. Your self-esteem will be A-OK!
