Martin Luther King

Today, Monday, January 16 is Martin Luther King Day.  Who is Martin Luther King and why do we celebrate him?

Who is Martin Luther King Jr

MLK was born back in the late 1920’s, specifically January 15, 1929.  He was a civil rights leader who believed in racial equality. and he wanted to end segregation and fought hard for it.  Martin Luther King came from a pastor family and did many speeches fighting for what he believed in – most notably the ‘I have a Dream speech’ back in 1963.

Peace

Did you know that MLK won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964?  What an accomplishment to win such a coveted prize.  All MLK Jr wanted was peace and equality because every human deserves respect.  Sadly, less than 4 years later, MLK Jr. was assassinated.  You can see more details of the timeline of his life at nationaltoday.com.

How to celebrate MLK Day

One of the best ways to celebrate today is to honor the man who fought so hard for racial justice.  You can do this by learning more what racial injustice means and how you can do something different.  Talk.  Be an advocate for justice where you live.  Don’t just think it’s someone else’s problem or that you have nothing to do with it.  There is always something you can do.  So, take this day and at least one thing to:

  1. Learn about racial inequality.
  2. Speak up!
  3. Stand up!
  4. Search for peace!
