The Effects of Alcohol on Skin

Think that alcohol doesn’t hurt you?  There really are the effects of alcohol on skin and it would be a good idea to limit the amount of alcohol intake.

The Effects of Alcohol on Skin

There are days that we can all use a glass of wine after a hard day.  The more times you do this, though, the more your skin will suffer because there are effects of alcohol on skin.  For one, it causes the blood vessels in your skin to get bigger and this is one of the reasons why your face gets red after drinking.  When the vessels dilate, the capillaries can break.  After all this drinking, you may get permanently red faced.  Not a great thing.  That is the exact skin damage you want to avoid.

Alcohol dehydrates you and can make you age faster.  You look older because of more visible wrinkles and fine lines.  Who wants to look older.  If that doesn’t make you want to stop drinking, know that the more alcohol you drink can also affect your hormones.

Other options to drink

The good news is that you have options.  To avoid the effects of alcohol on skin, the best thing you can drink is water.  Water is very hydrating and it will keep you from getting dehydrated.  Our skin needs water so it’s the perfect drink.  Other options are:

  • Green tea, which is an antioxidant.  Green tea is great because it can help our collagen.  We need collagen so that our skin look young and not saggy.  Green tea can also help from sun damage.  You can drink it as a tea or you may want to use it in your skin care products.
  • Kombucha – For all the probiotics, antioxidants and B vitamins, kombucha is the way to go.
  • Switchel – this one is a new one for me.  I never heard of switchel but it is an apple cider vinegar drink that includes ginger.  You may have heard the numerous health benefits of apple cider vinegar (ACV), one of which that can help you with your gut.  Having a happy gut means you look and feel better.

So, if you don’t want to be permanently red faced, stop drinking alcohol and start drinking these other beverages.
