How to wake up without puffy eyes

Tired of dark circles and want to know how to wake up without puffy eyes?  There are some easy ways to avoid that tired look.

Dark circles and puffy eyes

You dealt with it before, those dark circles and puffy under eyes that are the tell-tale signs that you haven’t gotten enough, restful sleep.  A few things could have contributed to this, most likely stress and worry as well as partying.  Let’s look at each one and then see how to wake up without puffy eyes.

Stress & Worry

When we are stressed about anything, we are going to worry.  Both of these will make anyone have difficulty sleeping.  When we lay our heads down, our bodies are supposed to rest and replenish ourselves.  As much as we talk ourselves into thinking that we aren’t worried, when we try to sleep, our brains are trying to sort through the problems we are having.  This is why we don’t rest and why you end up waking up looking like a raccoon with dark circles under your eyes.

Partying

Another reason we might wake up looking this way is from the drinking you may have done the night before.  The more alcohol you consume, the more inflammation and dehydration you are going to cause.  Plus, the alcohol won’t let you sleep well.  You may fall asleep quickly, but around 2 AM, you are going to be tossing and turning – most likely wide awake.

So, this brings me to how to wake up without puffy eyes.  We all go through things in our life and worry and stress is part of it.  Sometimes, we feel like we need something to get through and if we choose alcohol, it seems to help in the short term.  The problem lies in how often and how much we do this.  If you are having one alcoholic beverage every now and again, that’s one thing.  But, if every night you decide to have a drink or several drinks, that’s a problem.  It’s also contributing to those dark, puffy circles under your eyes.

Here’s how to combat that.  For one, we do need to learn how to manage those stresses and worries we face.  Unfortunately, worry and stress are part of life.  It’s managing it that is key.  The best way I found to manage that stress and worry is to not only talk about it with a trusted friend / family member (or counselor, if necessary) and then also to meditate.  Take some quiet time to work through it and still your mind.  It’s amazing that even 1 minute of stillness (AKA mindfulness) can do wonders to how well you sleep that night.  Try it.

Next, is the drinking issue.  I do understand that sometimes it’s nice to have a glass of wine or whatever your beverage of choice is.  When it becomes consistent or excessive, we need to find a different way.  My way is to drink some kombucha instead or even a switchel.  It’s a nice little treat and I am not dehydrating myself and causing any extra inflammation that my body doesn’t need.
