Perimenopause skin care

Perimenopause skin care is very important once you hit your 40’s.  We don’t realize that hormonal changes are affecting our skin – until you see it.

Skin care through time

As we age, our skin changes.  We don’t think about it too much when we’re younger.  When we hit our pre-teen years, and hormones start to rage, we see some effects on our skin.  Depending on the severity of these effects, we may not be too concerned.  Once it becomes more noticeable to us as well as others, we pay more attention.  We buy products and scrub our skin in the hopes of washing away the oil that is causing our acne.

We manage our skin care the best way we know how and for the most part, we think we’re managing it OK – with an occasional breakout or skin sensitivity reaction.  It’s concerning but we are busy with life in our 20’s and 30’s.  When we hit our 40’s, we’re frustrated.

You may have noticed even more skin changes when you hit your 40’s.  Perimenopause skin changes occur and that can range from dryness to acne.  Perimenopause dry skin means fine lines and wrinkles which is never a welcome sight!  There’s a moisture imbalance and we look dehydrated.

Maybe you have acne and maybe your pores look bigger.  Just looking in the mirror causes you alarm because you feel like you did when you were 13 and that’s not a good feeling.  It’s another blow to our self-esteem.  That’s why perimenopause skin care is so important.

What’s happening during Perimenopause?

During this stage in our lives, we start seeing more changes in our estrogen levels.  I recently attended a seminar by Dr. Mitchell discussing Perimenopausal Beauty and how our skin changes as we age.  We basically lose estrogen starting in our 30’s and 40’s.  While everyone is different in how they experience perimenopause, there is an emotional toll.

Estrogen imbalances

What happens when we hit perimenopause?

  1. Our periods aren’t as regular – this can mean anything from missed periods to heavy, prolonged bleeding.
  2. Hot flashes and night sweats.
  3. Vaginal dryness – ugh!
  4. Depression, anxiety
  5. Inability to focus, brain fog.
  6. Extra pounds
  7. Skin issues such as dry skin or acne.

Where does perimenopause skin care come in

These estrogen imbalances also mean that we are producing less collagen.  There was a time where we had a lot of collagen.  Collagen plays an important role because our skin has elasticity and moisture wo when we lose collagen, our skin starts to sag and get dry.  Aging skin care is essential at this point.
