Is your makeup safe

Is your makeup safe?  Maybe you’ve never really thought about it.  I used to think all our food was safe until I realized it wasn’t.  Now, makeup?

Makeup

When you were a little girl, you may have used your mothers’ makeup, putting eye shadow on way over your eyebrows and lipstick on all over and around your lips.  At that age, we’re so carefree.  It’s fun and we love to play dress up so you don’t think or even know to question if your makeup is safe or not.

Fast forward many years and you start wearing more makeup – as a teenager and then it continues into adulthood.  We like to look and feel pretty and we feel that makeup helps us do that.  Whether you are someone who wears very minimal amounts or someone who wears more, all makeup needs to be scrutinized.

Is your makeup safe?

Before we go into makeup safety, I want to tell you a story.  This story is about our food supply and it’s a story about how I believed and trusted that products were safe and wouldn’t hurt me.  I was naive.

Toxins in our food supply

We generally trust what is on grocery store shelves and don’t think about it.  But not until I started to do research why my body wasn’t quite working the way I thought it should did I stumble on a 2009 documentary by Robert Kenner called Food, Inc.  I finally started to understand / realize that I shouldn’t blindly accept that things are safe – food, cosmetics, medications, etc.

I started to come down with migraines, very heavy uterine bleeding, acne in my 40s, and the list goes on.  Sure, you can attribute any of these things to something else but when you start understanding what you are eating or putting on your body, you start to question the safety of it.  That is what I did.  I realized that I needed to learn and take control of what I wanted to put in my body.  Once I knew the truth, I scrutinized and was definitely more skeptical about products.  This brings me to makeup.

So, is your makeup safe?  You should be questioning it.  According to the EWG (the Environmental Working Group), the cosmetics industry isn’t really watched.  You can read the short paragraph on their website plus they have many more articles about various products to watch out for or be aware of.

The important thing to realize is that we can’t blindly accept what large corporations are selling us.  Sure, not everyone will get sick or maybe they have mild side effects.  If you’re someone who has suffered or is currently suffering from things like:

  • Migraines
  • Fibroids
  • Acne
  • Depression
  • Etc.

Then, you should pay attention.  Don’t blindly believe that corporations have your best interest in mind.  Watch those cosmetic thieves because they are mostly interested in their bottom line.  Start looking at the ingredients (not only in your foods but also) in your cosmetics.  Refer to the Skin Care Ingredient Checker that I update periodically with new information.

Be informed!  It’s amazing how little you really have to spend when it comes to cosmetics and skin care.  There is no need to believe the marketing.  Stay healthy by understanding what you are using.  Start with watching Food, Inc. by Robert Kenner, buy organic, read labels on all products, and make better decisions for you and your family.  You’ll be healthier for it and you’ll look better too.  Uncover your beautiful skin by choosing products that are better for you.
