Hot wings and celery

Hot wings and celery – they’re always served together.  Who doesn’t love hot wings but here is why celery isn’t just for hot wings.

Hot wings chicken wings

I love me some hot wings so if you’re like me, whenever they are sitting in front of you, you just have to eat them.  I’ll admit that I try not to get them at restaurants because I know they’re fried and the hot sauce is probably not something I want to eat because of all the preservatives inside them.  Still, they are delicious and so I’ve made them at home in the oven, often with a homemade wing sauce recipe.

But did you ever wonder why hot wings and celery are often served together?

Hot wings and celery

Not many people I know love the taste of celery but when they’re served up with some hot wings, we gobble it up.  Actually, we gobble them up with some ranch dressing.  The celery is the vehicle that helps cool down our mouths after eating a fiery chicken wing.  This is because dairy helps to bring that fire down.  You could do the same thing by just eating a spoonful of yogurt of even a sip of milk – or even a spoonful of that ranch dressing.

I mean, I won’t fault anyone for thinking that but I also think it’s great that we get some of our vegetables in – even if after eating something not so healthy for us but I should also tell you that celery has it’s own problems and that’s why you should be mindful of hot wings and celery.

The problem with celery

I’ll admit that I’ve had to get used to the taste of celery.  It’s good for you for sure and I’m even aware that some give it a ‘negative calorie count’.  What this means is that there is virtually no calories in a stick of celery and the fact that you have to really chew it negates the calories just because of the energy it takes to consume it.  Is that true?  Who really knows but I like the idea.  But, there is a problem with celery.

Celery, if not organic, is on EWG’s Dirty Dozen list.  This means that all those chemical pesticides are being taken in and that’s not so good for your health or your hormones.  These toxins poison us and it’s what can cause things like adult acne, chin acne, and very heavy periods.  So, if you’re going to eat hot wings and celery, it’s best to do so with organic celery.
