Hormone Imbalance Heavy Periods
Do you have a hormone imbalance heavy periods? Using a lot of tampons and pads? Hormones! We feel like they could be the death of us sometimes. If there is an imbalance of hormones, you are likely to have heavy periods.
Cortisol and Insulin
We’ve all heard of cortisol and insulin but we may not know the role they have in our bodies or on our hormonal system. These hormones are at the top of the endocrine system. If something happens with either of these hormones, all the rest of your hormones will be out of whack. We have often heard of cortisol as the stress hormone. It’s called this because it will provide glucose to your body if you are in a precarious or unsafe situation. Insulin will help movement in your body to get away!
Problem is that if they get too high (i.e. with constant stress), it doesn’t bode well for the other hormones our bodies produce. As time goes on, our bodies “understand” that we are in danger and so everything else slows: for one, ovulation (who can think about getting pregnant when we’re in danger?)! Now is not the time to reproduce when we’re in danger. So, stress of any kind, including from our jobs, can lead to the inability to get pregnant. It is frustrating but managing our stress is so important. Sometimes, things just need to change and we need to make that happen so that we don’t have a hormone imbalance heavy periods.

Hormone imbalance heavy periods
So, if these hormones are imbalanced, it could mean heavier periods for you. By a heavy period, I mean having to change your pad or tampon every hour or so. And, I’m not talking about the regular size tampons – I’m talking the Ultra tampons. If you don’t even know what these are, you’re lucky. But, if you’ve had to go on a search for a more absorbent tampon, you’ve discovered the Ultra! Even so, the Ultra doesn’t cut it. Sometimes you might be lucky to go a half hour before having to change it. Worse, you may need a pad as a back-up, especially if you need to be away from a bathroom.
All of this leads to so much anxiety. If you can’t get to the bathroom, what do you do? You have a flooding accident and that’s embarrassing! You tend to not want to leave the house. This is not a good way to live and your quality of life is diminished.

What’s next?
If this is you and maybe you don’t yet realize it, but if you feel like you have premenstrual syndrome, heavier periods, you no longer feel sexy, weight just sticks to you, and you’re super tired ALL the time. This is all thanks to your raised cortisol!
And, insulin – well, this hormone isn’t innocent either. Like it’s friend, cortisol, insulin also can reduce sex drive but it also helps our blood sugar stay constant. When we’re stressed, we tend to eat more carbs – i.e. sugar! And, the body needs to deal with all that sugar.
When your blood sugar is raised to elevated levels and your insulin levels go up with / because of it, you’ll have PMS, pcos heavy period, fibroids, flooding, migraines, mental health issues such as anxiety and depression, and skin problems like acne – even in your 40’s.
Just know this is happening can be priceless in helping you start to deal with Hormone imbalance heavy periods.
