Can you exfoliate too much
If you’re like most people, you don’t know how often you should exfoliate. Can you exfoliate too much? What is too much? Let’s find out!
What is exfoliation?
Exfoliating is the process of removing the top layer of dead skin cells. It’s as simple as that. Our bodies naturally exfoliate themselves. It’s true – every day, we shed skin cells whether we know it or not. Our bodies are amazing in that way but the problem is that it’s generally not enough. Our bodies are more efficient at this but as we get older, our bodies need help.

When we hit our 30’s, 40’s, and beyond, our bodies can’t shed the dead skin fast enough. This is where exfoliation comes in. If you have trouble with acne, exfoliating can be very helpful because it can help clear your pores by unclogging them – allowing your skin to breathe. On the other hand, if you are starting to see fine lines or wrinkles, regular exfoliation will also help here by removing those cells that are trapped in the crevices. By doing this, your skin will look less dull. It is so simple, yet exfoliating is one of those things that many don’t quite understand. But, it begs the question: Can you exfoliate too much?

Can you exfoliate too much
This is the million-dollar question about exfoliating: Can you exfoliate too much? The short answer is yes, absolutely! You may be wondering how that is possible, especially after we talked about all the benefits. The problem is it depends on your skin type. The number one reason people run into problems with exfoliating is because they don’t do the right amount based on their skin type. It doesn’t matter if your sister or best friend exfoliates every day – what matters is your skin and how often it would help you to exfoliate. So, let’s review how often that should happen, based on skin type.
Dry or Sensitive Skin
If your skin is either dry or sensitive, we’ve already determined that it is still necessary and beneficial to exfoliate. However, the frequency should only be once per week. Yes, you read that right – only ONCE per week!!! This is enough to remove those dead skin cells and help your skin look beautiful. Why would you need to do any more than is necessary. So, only use your Nutt So Ruff face scrub for sensitive skin once per week.

Oily or Combination Skin
What about if your skin is oily or combination skin? With this type of skin, I would recommend exfoliating 3 times per week but you can go up to 5. So, as a general rule, exfoliate every other day. That’s what I do.

Normal Skin
Ah, normal skin. Who has normal skin? If you’re lucky to have this skin type, congratulations! And, for you, you can exfoliate daily if you choose.
Any skin type
Lastly, no matter what skin type you have, I’d like to mention that you shouldn’t exfoliate more than what is recommended. So, even if you have normal skin and can exfoliate daily – it doesn’t mean that you can or should exfoliate twice each day. Exfoliating more often than what is recommended will not help your skin look or feel any better. Save your money and exfoliate only what is necessary based on your skin type.
