Shark Week Skin Care

It’s shark week skin care!  What do sharks have to do with your skin?  How to uncover your beautiful skin and keep sharks safe.

Shark week skin care

What is shark week skin care?  Here’s the thing, we all need moisture for our skin and shark’s have something called squalene.  Squalene is something that we have in our skin naturally.  The problem is that we lose it and can always use more, especially as we age.

The other problem is that even though shark’s have this, we shouldn’t be harvesting squalene from sharks.  This could turn into a situation where sharks become endangered.  As much as we may not want to ever encounter a shark, they are vital to our ecosystem.

Squalene in sharks

As mentioned, squalene is abundant in sharks.  We need it, they have it.  The good news is that we can use plant derived squalene (squalane) instead.  And, that makes everyone smile.  But, how does squalene help us?

Squalane skin care

Squalane is a great.  Here are just some of the benefits of squalane:

  • Great moisturizer
  • Helps keep collagen strong
  • Keeps age spots from forming
  • Not oily – even though it’s an oil.
  • Absorbs very well.
  • Great for all skin types.
  • Plant derived

What skin types benefit from squalane skin care?

No matter what skin type you have, you want to keep your skin moist.  While some people may not need as much (i.e. if you have oily skin vs. dry skin), you still want to make sure your skin has enough moisture.  The good news is that squalane is great for all skin types – even oily skin because it isn’t oily.  When I say it isn’t oily, I mean that it’s a light oil and won’t clog pores.

Oily skin

When you have oily skin, you spend all your time trying to dry up those greasy spots.  The problem comes when you dry it out too much.  Our bodies are amazing and when it realizes there’s not enough oil, it will make more so it becomes a vicious cycle.  So, making sure you don’t use products that strip your skin of oil is essential and using a great emollient like squalane can help keep moisture locked in, without the grease.  Some examples of products that strip skin of natural oils are nose strips (those ones you use for blackheads on your nose) and astringents.  It’s better to use a natural toner than one that uses alcohol.

Dry skin

Obviously, with dry skin, you know you need more moisture.  Your skin feels cracked and parched all the time.  This is a no brainer.  And, squalane comes to the rescue here, too.  Added tip:  exfoliating will help as well since it will remove those dead skin cells that get trapped in those crevices.  Your skin will start looking more vibrant if you just exfoliate once per week.

Other skin types

Oily skin and dry skin can really be helped with squalane but all skin types will benefit.  Squalane benefits for women are huge and you will notice a difference in your skin.
