The truth about agave nectar
You probably think that agave nectar is one of those sweeteners that is OK to use. If you do, I regret to tell you that it isn’t. Here’s the truth about agave nectar.
Agave nectar as a sweetener
A lot of people think that agave nectar is a sweetener that isn’t as bad for you as sugar. I used to be one of them so don’t feel bad. I was so wrong! Did you know that it’s actually highly processed and has more fructose than high fructose corn syrup!!! Much of the agave nectar sold isn’t from the agave plant sap. if you want to use the real stuff, find miel de agave – but be aware – it is REALLY expensive!!! That truly is a bummer but it just goes to show you how well marketing works. I was fooled along with everyone else.
Alternatives
There are alternatives, such as honey or maple syrup. Both of these have a lot of natural sugar. Honey, though has a little bit of protein, B vitamins, vitamin C, potassium, calcium and even iron – plus enzymes! And, it’s antibacterial. Still, you’ll want to limit how much sugar (in any form) you use because you don’t want to go above the recommended amount. But, an added bonus to honey is that you can try it for acne problems too!
