6 tips to finding products for acne prone skin
Acne is traumatic so here are 6 tips to finding products for acne prone skin. It can be confusing to understand what type of acne you have and what you should do about it.
My story
I’ve suffered from acne for years so we really do have too much in common. It’s important to understand that acne is normal and there are things you can do to manage your acne breakouts and to also ensure you aren’t contributing to the issue.
I posted an article the other day about this, which goes into a little more detail. If you’re interested in reading more, here’s the link to: Acne Strategy: How to Acne. Today, I’d like to focus on a few specific things like 6 tips to finding products for acne prone skin.
What does Non-Comedogenic vs. Non-acnegenic mean?
As we learned the other day in Acne Strategy: How to Acne, these are not approved labels and they are confusing. It basically boils down to the ingredients in the product and if they have the potential for acne to form vs. the product was tested on people and no acne occurred during their testing. To me, these terms are meant to be confusing. They make it sound like you shouldn’t get acne if you use these products. That is far from what it truly means.
It’s basically a marketing strategy because you know that you can still break out if you are acne prone or have very sensitive skin. When you get a break out after using these products, it’s frustrating because you not only believed the marketing but you just spent money on something you were told wouldn’t cause acne (or at least, they made you believe that which is what marketing is).
My solution when you’re trying to figure out what to do…Stick to the fundamentals…
Here are my tips…
6 tips to finding products for acne prone skin:
- Wash your face with a gentle cleanser no more than 2 times a day. Do not use harsh cleansers and try to scrub away acne! You can’t scrub acne away! Make sure it doesn’t have fragrance in it!
- Exfoliate according to your skin type (here’s the link for more information on exfoliating). A good face scrub bar is essential.
- Watch what you put into your body. Although food isn’t directly linked to acne, it’s still better to eat well so that your body can do what it does best: heal! Give your body a fighting chance!
- Be mindful of what you are touching your face with – hands, cell phones, etc. If these are oily, you aren’t helping your skin. Be careful of hair care products that contain oil. For example, if your hair care product (including shampoos) contain coconut oil, you will get a breakout. As with food, watch the ingredients in your hair / skin care product.
- Drink plenty of water.
- Experiment slowly to see what works for you and what doesn’t. Generally, it could about 5 weeks of trying a new product for it to work fully so be patient. Here are 10 things to try when Acne won’t clear.
