Father’s Day is June 19

Father’s Day is June 19 this year.  What are your plans to make your Dad feel special?  Give him a big HUG and make your Dad happy.

Father’s Day is June 19

When it was Mother’s Day, I reminded you that you should not forget about things.  This includes your Dad.  All loving parents really want is to spend time with their kids.  They don’t need anything, especially material things.  That’s not what is important to them.  For year, I felt that I needed to buy my Dad something for Father’s Day but I realized that he didn’t want anything.  I’d buy a gift and while he appreciated it, I knew the real happiness came from me being there for him.

What does your Dad like to do?

Think about what your Dad likes to do.  Father’s Day is June 19 so it’s right around the corner and it will be here faster than you think.  What does your Dad enjoy?

Suggestions

When you think back when you were a kid, what did you and your Dad do together?  This will give you some idea of what you might want to do for him for Father’s Day.  You could:

  • Go fishing
  • Cook out – invite him over and grill a nice big steak
  • Take him out to eat (especially if you aren’t a great cook – ha ha!)
  • Sit on your back patio and have a refreshing beverage – this could be a beer but it could also just be an iced tea.
  • Woodworking – does your Dad like to make things?  Do a woodworking project with him.  Sure, this may take longer than a day, but how fun would it be to do a project with your Dad.
  • Take him to a ball game.

For me, my Dad is real simple.  Like I said, I used to try to find the perfect gift for my Dad and it was too stressful.  When I finally realized that he didn’t want anything and that he just wanted to spend the time with me – no matter what we were doing, life got easier. I didn’t need to stress out if the shirt was the right size anymore.  These days, my Dad has a hard time getting around so I can’t have him come over.  Instead, I bring a meal and we share some food and just enjoy each other’s company.  I am so looking forward to it.

These are just some suggestions but as you can see from the list, these are all ‘experiences’ and not things.  Things are not what your Dad needs.  He wants to spend time with you.  We only have a limited amount of time so being with those we love is the ultimate gift.  Time is so precious.  You never know how long you have with the people in your life.  Make it count.  Have zero regrets.

Regrets

Have ZERO regrets.  If you’ve ever lost anyone close to you, you know how painful it is.  You just never know.  Sometimes we see it coming – such as from an ongoing illness – or sometimes it’s sudden – i.e. from an accident or an unexpected illness.  It’s hard either way.  When the time comes, you don’t want to have any regrets.  The things that you have to do can wait but time waits for no one.

Remember, Father’s Day is June 19 and it’s the perfect day to do something with your Dad.  Just enjoy the day with him.  It doesn’t have to be anything fancy.  It just has to be about experiencing the time together.  Make it casual and just be mindful and in the moment.  Those are the best kind of days – the ones you don’t really have to plan.  Relax and enjoy – that’s what life is all about.

I’d love to hear what you did for your Dad this year.  Add a comment to let me know.
