Homemade natural nail polish

Things that are toxic to our health have been on the forefront of my mind and that includes nail polish.  If you’re looking for a homemade natural nail polish, you’ve come to the right place – easy and cheap!  You can make your own nail stain with easy to get ingredients!

Is your body toxic?

Personal care products contain many chemicals – just take a look at your bathroom shelf and read the labels.  If you see preservatives, parabens, phthalates or toluene, you have a toxic product in your home.  You can check out my skin care ingredient checker as well.

You may be thinking:  ‘but it’s not negatively affecting me’.  Think again.  Ask yourself:

  • Do you get headaches / migraines?
  • When you are around perfumes or ‘scents’, does it make you sneeze?
  • Perhaps you get a runny nose?

Your body may be toxic because all of these are signs of allergic reactions, and these are the exact things that were happening to me.  Even so, I disregarded the signs until I couldn’t take it anymore!

One of the first things I decided to get rid of was my nail polish.  I’m not going to say it was easy because I really liked having polished nails.  I would even paint my nails with a clear (rather than color) on some days just because I thought it made my nails look nicer.  But, I couldn’t disregard the toluene toxin anymore and decided to make my own nail stain.  They look great on short Valentines Day nails in February.

Ingredients for your homemade natural nail polish:

  • Cold pressed olive oil
  • Bentonite clay
  • Henna or beet root powder
  • Clean nail polish bottle and brush

Directions:

  1. Take about 1 Tbsp of the olive oil and mix with 1/2 tsp of the clay.
  2. Start adding a little henna or beet root powder to your oil / clay mix until you get the desired color.
  3. Take an old nail polish brush and brush your nails with the mixture.  (Note:  you can also use a cotton swab / Q-tip to apply to your nails.)
  4. Leave on for 20 minutes but make sure to wipe around your nails (you don’t want to stain your skin).
  5. Allow to dry and wipe any excess away with a damp cloth.
