How do you treat blackheads
Blackheads are so common that I am sure you’ve had them before. What are blackheads and how do you treat blackheads – we’ll cover it here.
What are blackheads
Blackheads are very common. They happen when dead skin cells and oil get clogged in your pores. With blackheads, the pore is open, causing all that junk in your pore to turn yellow, brown and sometimes black. Hence the name ‘blackheads’.
It’s common to get blackheads on your nose but they can happen anywhere, including:
- Your chin
- Forehead
- Cheeks
- Your back
- Neck
- Shoulders
How do you treat blackheads
So how do you get rid of blackheads? Blackheads treatment is pretty straightforward but I am often asked a few very common questions:
- ‘Should you squeeze blackheads?’ and
- ‘What draws blackheads out?’

I’ll offer you 3 suggestions plus explain if you should use pore strips so keep reading…
Should you use pore strips?
Pore strips became popular quite a few years ago for the treatment of blackheads. However, you should never use pore strips for blackheads removal. Why? The problem with pore strips is that they strip your skin of natural oils. While they are ‘removing’ the blackhead, it’s taking oil out of your skin at the same time. The more oil your skin loses, the more your skin will produce. This is because your body was tricked. Your skin is thinking it needs to produce more oil to compensate for the loss of oil. It’s a vicious cycle. More oil = more acne.

3 Suggestions on how do you to treat blackheads
I do have some suggestions for you. Here are my top 3 ways:

- Exfoliate! To me, this is the most effective way to maintain your skin and make sure you keep blackheads from forming. Exfoliating removes dead skin cells and oil that get stuck in your pores. It is such an easy solution. It doesn’t damage your skin (if done correctly).
- Vitamin A (Retinoid) cream – these creams help to make new skin cells. You can buy low potency creams over the counter but if you need something stronger, you’ll have to see a dermatologist.
- Go to the doctor to have them extracted. If you have severe blackheads or a lot of them, you might want to consider having them extracted by a dermatologist. I wouldn’t suggest squeezing them to extract blackheads yourself but here’s a way to do it safely (if you must).
4 Other things to keep in mind
- If you have oily skin, please don’t use oil-based products on your oily face. Your skin doesn’t need more oil than it already has. So, unless your skin is dry, stay away from the oil-based products. Also, don’t use anything with alcohol in it as that will dry your skin out too much – again, contributing to further oil production.
- To help prevent future problems, make sure you wash your face in the morning and at night. Use a gentle cleanser and do just that, clean your skin. Wash off the make-up, dirt and sweat.
- It bears repeating – exfoliate regularly, depending on your skin type.
- Don’t touch your face all the time – this means keeping hands away (and always keeping them clean). It would also be a good idea to keep the phone away from your face.
So now you know how do you treat blackheads. It isn’t hard if you take these steps and keep them in mind.
