Obvious pores on the surface of the skin indicate something is happening. What is it and is there anything you can do about it?
What are pores?
If you look at your skin, you may notice something that looks like a hole in the skin. In fact, they cover your whole body but you notice it more on your face. These small holes are your pores and they allow your natural oils and sweat to pass through. The bigger the pore, the more noticeable it is and for many, this is unsightly and definitely unwanted.

Pores are necessary so that the sebum and the sweat can get through. The oils in our skin helps to keep our skin soft and therefore, not dry. Although if you generally have oily skin and try to scrub off all that oil, your skin will actually produce more oil to compensate. If you’ve ever asked yourself, ‘Why is my nose so shiny‘, this is why. As far as sweating goes, sweating helps to remove toxins from our bodies so this is definitely a necessary function.

When we exercise, we sweat out those toxins!

But, obvious pores on the surface of the skin indicate something. What is it?
Obvious pores on the surface of the skin
As we age, our skin changes. Part of that change is the loss of elasticity. When we lose elasticity, our pores look larger and seemingly more unsightly. So, obvious pores on the surface of the skin indicate that we are getting older. Sad, but true.

The good news is that it doesn’t have to be this way – at least we can do something about it.
Skin care as we age
When we hit our 30’s, but definitely when women hit their 40’s, we start noticing changes in our skin. Our hormones are changing and they may not be at optimal levels. The skin may sag more and we may even start getting acne – again! Or, our skin becomes dry. We may start noticing wrinkles and fine lines. Great, right?! This is where perimenopausal skin care comes in.
Since our hormones are fluctuating, it is causing these issues. One of the issues is the loss of collagen in our skin. Collagen is important because it gives our skin elasticity.

5 Steps to stop the effects of aging / large pores
First, it’s important to know your skin type AND understand that skin changes can occur – even as seasons change. For example, your skin may be more oily in the summer months whereas it is drier in the winter. That means that you need to change your skin care routine as your skin changes.
Exfoliation is important but you need to exfoliate more when your skin is oily vs. when it is dry. Find out here on how to exfoliate your skin, based on skin type. Everyone’s skin is different so it’s important to know yours. Exfoliate with a natural face scrub.

Next, eating a balanced diet so that you get the nutrients your body and skin needs is also important. Without the vitamins and other nutrients, our skin doesn’t have a fighting chance. For example, we need vitamin C so that we have collagen. Without this vitamin, we can’t produce collagen. It’s such an easy thing to do and the benefits are obvious. Eat well and watch your skin stay healthy.

Then, water – I can’t say enough about staying hydrated. If we get dehydrated, our bodies lose water, including our skin. Dehydrated face skin care is so important and the way to do that is by drinking more water. If you don’t like water, try adding a natural flavor such as sliced cucumbers, lemons or strawberries to the water for flavoring. It’s important to get enough water throughout the day.

Exercise! We need to work out not only to get our hearts pumping but also to sweat. When we sweat, those toxins are excreted through our pores. Work up a sweat about 3 times per week and watch your skin get that healthy glow you’ve been looking for!

Lastly, it’s OK to give our skin a boost. Anti-aging products that contain things like hyaluronic acid and vitamin C can go a long way. Serums help a lot. And, of course sunscreen! Always wear sunscreen! ALWAYS!
So, even though obvious pores on the surface of the skin indicate aging, we don’t just have to let it happen. Eat well, drink water, exercise, use serums and exfoliate!
