Why is protein important

Food is made up of carbohydrates, fats and proteins.  There’s a certain balance of each that we need but why is protein important for our bodies to function properly?

Why is protein important?

There are so many reasons, actually.  I didn’t even realize how vital it was until I started to track my food in a food journal and realized that I wasn’t getting enough in my diet.  I wouldn’t call myself a vegetarian by any stretch of the imagination but I also don’t eat that much meat.  I do like meat but I tend to not eat a ton of it – or at least enough for me to get the right amount.  But, why is protein important?

Benefits of protein

Here are the reasons to eat protein:

  • Builds our muscles and our organs
  • Even helps our nails and hair grow (or not fall out!)
  • Allows cells to talk to each others
  • Helps our muscles to move
  • Also helps with nerve signals to our muscles so that they can move.

Lack of protein symptoms

Did you know that you will start seeing issues with your health if you do not eat enough protein?  Yeah, neither did I!  My issues were in the form of hormonal issues.  If you’re insulin is out of whack, you’ll have all kinds of period related problems like heavy bleeding.

All of this can make you fatter.  Further, if we’re not getting enough protein that contains Vitamin B12, we’ll have estrogen dominance and thyroid issues.  We start having mood issues and no one wants to be around us.  You might think this is fine because you’ll be too tired to even interact with people anyways!  That is no kind of life.

Good sources

Look for high quality meat protein, such as grass fed beef.  Or, try bison, pastured chicken and eggs.  If you lean more to the vegetarian side of things, opt for beans and nut butters (my favorite is almond butter but you can also choose peanut butter – here’s how to make peanut butter but you can sub almonds to make almond butter.)  Spinach and walnuts are also good sources of plant protein.
