Cold winter skin
Now that it’s winter, do you see the effects that cold winter skin is having on your body? What can you do to relieve the dry sensitive skin you are experiencing?
Cold Winter Skin
We are in the midst of winter and that means dry, indoor air from the furnace. Everywhere you go, there is very little humidity and while some people hate humidity, having some in the air is essential. In fact, even our hair doesn’t like the low humidity – think of the static electricity when you take off your hat.

If you’re like me, my hair is like an electrical charge going every direction. My hair is really fine and it’s almost like a baby’s but that is exactly what happens. So, if it the air is so dry, that means our skin and hair will suffer. That’s why cold winter skin needs a solution in the dry air and cold weather.

What to do about dry air
Obviously, some of this is inevitable. It gets cold outside so we have to turn the heat on. Fortunately, there are some easy solutions. For one, use a humidifier. The more water we bring into the environment really does make a difference. Even your plants will enjoy and benefit from it. Keeping the air moist will make our skin less itchy. You can buy an inexpensive room humidifier or go all out and put one on your furnace. A room humidifier is the perfect solution, especially in the bedroom.

Next, don’t over cleanse. Our culture has gotten into a habit of over cleansing our skin. We use so many different products, with countless fragrances, that it is causing hypersensitivity. So, don’t over do it. Cleanse your skin as needed. I should note that it is important to wash your hands frequently to keep germs away and to stay healthy. But, when it comes to cleansing our faces and our bodies, only a few areas need a lot of attention. Use a mild cleanser, when / as needed. In fact, especially in the winter, you don’t need to take a full blown hot shower every day.
This means showering just when we’re really dirty. If you feel like you must step in the shower daily, do so to rinse off and to clean those areas like your privates and your armpits – and maybe your feet. See how your skin responds to less cleansing – you may actually be surprised.
Finally, exfoliate and dry brush. Prior to getting in the shower, do a quick dry brush – it can do wonders. And, for goodness sake, exfoliate. With dry skin, exfoliating is only needed about once per week but man, can it help. Your skin will look less dull / more vibrant – and it will itch less too!
