Cosmetics role in skincare

When you wear makeup, what does it do to your skin? Acne doesn’t happen overnight.  Read on to learn cosmetics role in skincare.

What’s really going on?

Most likely, you have a follicle that is irritated – from something on your skin.  Think through your beauty regimen and figure out if there are any products that may actually be irritating your skin, causing the breakouts.  The good news is that you have a huge clue as to what caused the acne and you can do something about it.

The aggravating part of it is that you have some sensitivity that is irritating your skin.  I get it!  The other problem is that it can exacerbate acne prone skin.  It can cause your skin to make more oil.  It’s disheartening to realize that the products we buy may be causing more harm than good but you are in control of your skin’s health – and that’s a really great thing!

Irritants

There are a few things that can irritate your skin:

  • Alchohol
  • Acidic fruits, such as any citrus fruit (think lemons, grapefruit, etc.) and their oils
  • Menthol

The unfortunate thing is that many of these ingredients, natural or otherwise, are often used in acne products.  You may think there is a tingling feeling; thus, thinking it’s working.  But it’s actually an irritation.  When I was younger, there was a product I used almost on a daily basis.  When I’d put the white stuff on my face, I’d feel a tingling sensation.  This made me think it was cleaning my skin really well and would take away the blemishes I was experiencing.  Boy, was I wrong!  When I realized it was actually irritating my skin, causing my oil glands to go into over production, and thus causing more acne – I stopped using it.  It was quite a realization for me.

Endocrine disruptors in skin care

The sad truth is that the products we buy could have dramatic health effects – be it acne or hormonal issues.  Yes, endocrine disruptors in skin care is problematic, especially if we’re not paying attention.  This is the unfortunate truth about cosmetics role in skincare.  But once you know how certain ingredients may be affecting you, you can stop using those products.

Next steps

The best thing to do is to find a skin care routine that isn’t irritating – one that doesn’t use irritating ingredients.  Watch what you put on your skin, including what cosmetics you are putting on your skin.  Look at those ingredients to start to try to pinpoint what may be irritating your skin, causing acne.  Go for the natural beauty, if you feel comfortable.  But, if you insist on applying make-up, look at the ingredient list and decide if the ingredients are beneficial or hurtful before you apply.
