Food acne

It’s Halloween and there’s no better way to celebrate than by dressing up, passing out sugar filled candy and eating that delicious candy.  Who cares about food acne today, right?  There has been much debate on whether food causes acne.

The Tradition of Halloween

According to Info America USA, Halloween came to America in the early 20th century.  And, while it has evolved over the years, Americans have really come to love Halloween by:

  • Carving pumpkins
  • Dressing up (our kids and ourselves!)
  • Decorating our houses – inside and out
  • Buying candy to eat and pass out (generally, we think we buy enough, but then we run out by the week of Halloween and have to buy more so we have enough for the kiddos!)
  • Dressing up our dogs / cats
  • Baking (I make pumpkin rolls and pumpkin cheesecake!)

But, with all this sugar consumption, do we get food acne and should we worry about it?

Foods we should generally stay away from:

  • Candy
  • Cookies and cakes
  • Doughnuts
  • Ice cream
  • Soda / Pop

OK, I’m not going to go through everything you should stay away from because it’s Halloween.

But, it’s Halloween!!!

You know that any type of refined sugar isn’t good for you.  You also know that it’s OK to have a cheat day – as long as your cheat day doesn’t turn into a cheat week / month(s).  So, indulge in a few sweets on Halloween and don’t feel too bad about it.

A Gentle Reminder

Remember, though, that food acne is a thing and if you are prone to acne, you should limit how much you want to indulge.  I find that if I have a piece or 2 of candy, that’s enough to curb my Halloween cravings.  The last think you want to do is go 10 steps backwards after you’ve been doing so well.  Plus, with the link between sugar and wrinkles lurking, I’d rather keep my sugar intake and thus, my blood sugar, in check.

Try these foods to benefit your skin instead:

  • Almonds
  • Cantaloupe
  • Pears
  • Pecans
  • Sunflower seeds
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Berries

A few other suggestions that not excite you but are good for you:

  • Asparagus
  • Beans
  • Kale
  • Lettuce

All I’m saying is to keep everything in moderation, enjoy life and make changes when you notice your body isn’t running optimally.  Then, food acne can be a thing of the past!

Happy Halloween everyone!
