Low T in women

Testosterone is generally known as the male hormone but women have testosterone too.  When this hormone is inadequate, this is called low T in women (low testosterone in women).  Testosterone, along with Thyroid hormones and melatonin work together to help us function.

Enough Testosterone?  Low T in women

You may have heard before that testosterone is the male hormone but did you know that women also have this hormone, and that we need it to function properly?  When women have an ample supply of testosterone, our bodies benefit in some great ways like:

  • nice muscle tone
  • awesome, smooth skin
  • a good disposition and aren’t moody
  • an ability to deal with stress and uncertainty

Now that you know the benefits, isn’t it great that women have some level of testosterone in our bodies?  I mean, who doesn’t want to have nice muscles?  It makes us look sleek and fit!  And, skin – I’m all about having nice smooth skin.  We all strive for that because that’s what people first see when they meet us.  Plus, the psychological benefits of not being moody and being able to deal with stressors in life, testosterone is awesome!

If our bodies are working correctly, we should have the highest levels in our system right before we ovulate.  But, if your hormones are off balance, this could be a problem and this is when you see the bad skin like acne and you can’t seem to deal with stress very well.

Thyroid hormones

Just like our other hormones, testosterone works with our thyroid.  There are 2 hormones in particular that is made by the thyroid and these are triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4).  They are not the same as the thyroid stimulating hormones (TSH).  That is made by the pituitary gland.

These thyroid hormones (the T3 and T4) give us stamina and vitality.  In addition, thyroid hormones helps with:

  • Metabolism
  • Ensuring our hearts and brains are working properly
  • Digestion
  • Being able to move our muscles
  • Menstruation
  • Bones

Progesterone and thyroid

Did you know that the thyroid hormones work to ensure our cycles are functioning properly?  Hypothyroidism testosterone female issues are common.  Therefore, when there is low thyroid function, it can decrease the progesterone we make.  And, we already saw what problems with inadequate progesterone can cause.  If you’re starting to have heavy periods, your hormones could be ‘off’.  (Good news is that you can eat the right foods to help.)

Melatonin – the sleepy hormone

Lastly, there’s melatonin in which our digestive tract makes this, along with the pineal gland (also sometimes known as the Third Eye).  Melatonin helps us to fall asleep and when we wake up.  If we’re constantly watching our screens (phones, laptops, TV’s), our bodies have a hard time producing melatonin.  With low melatonin, the following make be an issue:

  • no ovulation
  • infertility
  • Pain from endometriosis
too much screen time can cause problems with our melatonin levels

This is yet another reason why we need to get enough sleep – but this means staying away from the computer and our phones all the time.  But, this doesn’t mean you should buy a melatonin supplement to increase your melatonin.  You want to ensure you have the right amount your body needs and not just add it willy nilly!  It’s better to stop the excessive use of electronics so that your melatonin levels can regulate itself.
