What is spirulina?

Spirulina is a blue-green algae and many people believe it is one of the oldest living things.  It comes in both powder and tablet form so you can take it as a supplement or add to other foods like smoothies.  It’s considered a Superfood because of all the amazing and positive health benefits it offers.

So, what are the benefits of taking this supplement or adding it to your favorite yogurt?  Here are my top 5 reasons that there are spirulina health benefits for women:

  1. The first obvious benefit is that it is nutritious.  With the B vitamins, copper, iron, and magnesium, it’s easy to see why this is a superfood.  We need these vitamins to function and sometimes we need a little extra kick if our diets aren’t plentiful in these nutrients.  Spirulina contains zeaxanthin, which is thought to be helpful for our eyes as we age.  It also contains protein!
  2. Skin health – along with the vitamins above, spirulina also contains beta carotene, GLA (a necessary polyunsaturated fatty acid), vitamin E, and zinc.  This means your skin is protected from UV rays, promotes elasticity of the skin, and helps with acne.
  3. Spirulina is considered to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.  Along with that, it’s good for your brain.  When your brain feels good, you feel good.
  4. Can help your mental health – spirulina contains tryptophan, which helps make serotonin.  We need serotonin to feel good – keeping depression and anxiety away.
  5. Menstruation and all that fun stuff – the nutrients in spirulina help remove toxins from our bodies, even during menstruation.  The GLA that it contains changes to prostaglandin and is the main reason it helps to remove toxins.  When you are a menstruating woman, it can mean that you don’t have all the common symptoms of PMS or at least not to the same degree.

What should I know before taking spirulina?

It’s important to make sure that you consume a high-quality spirulina.  This is because the non-organic form can contain high amounts of mercury or other heavy metals.  The last thing you need is to give yourself more toxins so be sure to buy a good quality product.  For more information, check out Spirulina benefits and risks.
