What will help acne scars
If you suffer from acne & acne scars, you know what it can do to your self-esteem. Find out what will help acne scars because it can be devastating.
The layers of our skin
Our skin is made up of a few layers; the epidermis, the dermis, and lastly, the fatty layer. Each layer has its own function and when you get a pimple, a part of the skin gets damaged. It even damages the collagen that our skin needs, especially as we get older. Our bodies are amazing and so is our skin. Your skin will try to repair itself and when it goes a little too far, you can get an acne scar. There are different types of acne scars. This includes the divots in your sin that look like holes; you might have heard the term ‘ice pick scars’.
Ice pick scars make our skin look uneven and it’s just not a good look. As we age, these acne scars can look even worse. Part of that is because of that collagen that was damaged. Our skin starts to sag but that scarred skin has scar tissue underneath. The deeper the scar, the less likelihood you can get rid of it. This is why it is so important to take care of your skin, treat it well, and don’t pick!
What will help acne scars
Sure, there are skin treatments you can do but I don’t often talk about things like chemical peels because I’m trying to help you to take the best care of your skin before it’s a huge problem. That way, if you do an occasional peel or dermabrasion, it can actually work for you and you get a decent amount of improvement in the look of your skin. You really have to talk to your doctor about your options. Sadly, with ice pick scars, there’s not a whole lot you can do. So, I must stress the importance of taking care of your skin – starting now and moving forward.
I did read about a neat little and cheap trick to figure out how deep your scar is to do the following:
Pull your skin gently. If the scar seems to disappear, you might get a pretty good improvement on some type of treatment. If your scar doesn’t go away magically by gently pulling on it, it means that it is too deep. There are actually 4 types of acne lesions. Understanding each can help you to deal with your skin.
If you do need to have surgery for your acne scars, there are some options.
Deep acne scar options
I don’t want to go too deep into this topic but here are some options I know about:
- Subcision.
- Punch excision
- Punch elevation
- Punch grafts
- Excisions
- Elevations
None of these sound fun to me and there is never a guarantee. I feel like any time you are damaging and manipulating your skin, you are just damaging it further. Not only will you have bruising but then there’s the healing time. Talk to your doctor and determine the best course of action for you.
Resurfacing
There is also a process that is called resurfacing. To me, it sounds like road rash on your face but the concept is that new skin cells will form and could give you more ‘even’ skin. Like I said before, our skin is amazing and cells will regenerate. The collagen can actually reconfigure itself. Fascinating.
The process involves damaging the dermis to make sure that the collagen remakes itself. The chemical peels or the microdermabrasion aren’t capable of damaging the dermis in this way so doing either of these treatments won’t help this situation – you would have to do a resurfacing.
Talk to your doctor because resurfacing really is surgery so you need time to heal. It will show on your face so unless you don’t mind going back to work looking like you got in a fight and were dragged across the concrete, you need to plan for the time – it can be months. It’s also key that you find a good surgeon because you want to make sure the surgery gets down to where it should so that it can get the collagen to grow. Otherwise, you are just hurting your skin for no reason and the damage can be permanent.
One of the dangers of this treatment option is discoloration of your skin and that, too, may be permanent. These are all things you need to weigh before deciding to move forward. To me, if your skin hasn’t gotten to the point where it needs this, don’t make it worse. Stop picking and squeezing your pimples. That way, you won’t cause further damage that might force you into looking into surgical options.
But, if your skin is already damaged, I understand why you would want to go this route – just think long and hard before you make the decision. Weigh all the risks. Ask yourself what will help acne scars – your scars.
Options
You do have options based on how deep your scarring is when to comes to what will help acne scars. You may decide to go with dermabrasion so long as you find someone who is skilled and knows how deep to go. I wouldn’t go to a salon to do this – you need a skilled professional.
With some scars, you may even be able to have injections that can help pump up the skin. There are different types of injections that can be used. Results are quick and it’s not that expensive. Remember that trick we did above, where you pinched your skin? What will help acne scars – in this case, it could be the injection. But, not necessarily for ice pick scars.
Finding a doctor
Finding the right doctor to answer your question about what will help acne scars is hugely important. They have to be qualified to do the surgery so that means a lot of training. Keep searching until you find the right one. Don’t settle for the first one you talk to. Don’t find someone on TV or on the internet that you saw an ad for. Ask people for recommendations. Ask your primary care doctor for a referral. You can even call the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery.
When you do go for your consultations, ask many questions such as:
- How many patients have you treated that have the same scarring issues as me?
- Can you show me pictures – before and after shots?
- Can you give me names of patients I can talk to? (Most likely they will say they can’t due to privacy laws but it doesn’t hurt to ask because some previous patients may have given consent if they had a really good experience.)
Emotional toll
There is a toll caused by acne scars. Everyone we meet sees our face and if you have scarring, you feel like you just want to hide your face.
