Does Alcohol Age People

Alcohol – how much do you drink when you socialize?  Alcohol has been around for humans for ages but does alcohol age people?

Alcohol history

I won’t bore you with a bunch of facts about how long alcohol has been around – but it’s been a LONG time!  According to World Atlas, alcohol was found nearly 10 million years ago!  That’s a long time!  So, it’s not new – humans have consumed various libations for centuries – people love to celebrate and relax with some boozy beverage.

Does alcohol age people?

You likely know the answer to this and each time you have a drink, you should ask yourself this question.  Of course alcohol makes us older.  Even AARP warns us of the effects on our brain from drinking too much.  Sadly, I’ve seen the effects of people who have abused their bodies through too much alcohol consumption.  Eventually, their brains don’t work and it’s a sad sight to see.

Dehydration

Another way that alcohol ages you is because of dehydration. When you’re in the moment and enjoying yourself, you’re not thinking about drinking water.  Since alcohol is dehydrating on its own, you’ll need extra water.  Unfortunately, that’s not usually what happens.

Rule of thumb

My rule of thumb:  after every drink, have a glass of water.  Also, I rarely will have more than 1 drink.   I don’t feel good if I do more than that and I don’t like feeling good.  So, not only have I vowed to not drink more than one drink per ‘outing’ but I also vowed to not have a drink more than 3 times a week.  I feel better for it and I look better too because alcohol makes you puffy.  (I don’t want puffy eyes!)  If you want to look better, drink less alcohol and more water.

Hormones

Another way that alcohol makes us age is through our hormones.  Alcohol raises our blood sugar and that’s not good for us.  When that happens too many times, it becomes a problem for our hormones like estrogen and progesterone.  It’s a vicious cycle because it affects our sleep.  Your body will process that alcohol when it’s bedtime and you won’t get a good night’s rest.

Perimenopause
Perimenopause is hard – especially difficult for our hormones.

So, does alcohol age people?  Well, as you can see, alcohol does age people.  If you want to look timeless, do what you can and drink less alcohol.  Here are some more timeless tips.
