Is Butylparaben safe

There are so many ingredients in skin care and it can be hard to determine which ones are safe to use.  So, is Butylparaben safe for you?

What is Butylparaben?

Butylparaben is actually a preservative that is used in skin care and it helps to minimize bacteria, which is a good thing.  It also helps to increase shelf life so that your skin care products can be more stable and last longer.  That means that you don’t have to buy the product as often because it can be a larger container and it won’t spoil.

This is all assuming that you do your part in maintaining a clean environment.  What does that mean?

  • Keep lids closed – that means keeping any jars, bottles, etc. closed.  Don’t leave the cap off or opened.  It should be a tight seal.
  • Keeping items in a less humid environment helps.  Unfortunately, the bathroom is a humid environment so a better option is to keep it out of the bathroom (and possibly in the refrigerator).  I know that’s not always possible and so that is the draw about preservatives.

That brings us to:   Is Butylparaben safe for you?

Is Butylparaben safe for you?

The problem I have with Butylparaben is that it is a paraben.  Parabens trick your body, specifically – it tricks your hormones because they act like hormones.  They are hormone disruptors.

What is a hormone disruptor you may ask?  Hormone disruptors act like other hormones in our body and when our bodies are confused by these parabens (AKA a hormone disruptor), your body starts to act as if there are more hormones than there really are.  What does this mean?

This means that you can have:

  • Heavy menstrual periods
  • Fibroids
  • Issues with reproduction
  • Cancer
  • Acne

And, this isn’t an exhaustive list.  So, to me, when I ask myself ‘is Butylparaben safe’ – I don’t think so!  Choose something else!
