Using the right sunscreen

It’s summer but no matter the season, you need to wear sunscreen.  Are you using the right sunscreen?  How can you tell?

Reasons we don’t wear sunscreen

We all know that we should wear sunscreen.  From an early age, your parents have probably told you that you should wear sunscreen.  It’s great advice but few follow it.  Here are some reasons people have said they don’t wear it all the time:

  • It’s not sunny outside.
  • I forgot.
  • I’m not going to be outside long.
  • It takes too long.

Does this sound like an excuse you’ve used before?  I know I have.  I’ve learned over the years that it’s no excuse.  If I want healthy skin and healthy-looking skin, it’s important to choose the right sunscreen.  But, there are so many to choose from.

So many sunscreens to choose from

It’s overwhelming when you go to the sunscreen aisle because there are so many sunscreens to choose from.  Using the right sunscreen is hard.  We know we need to wear it – that’s half the battle.  The other half is actually wearing it.  But, there’s the third part:  which one to choose.  I mean, how do you know you are using the right sunscreen?

There was even an article about it by CNN Health recently indicating that only 25% of the products available don’t have bad ingredients.  In fact, there are certain ingredients that should be avoided at all costs and they are:

  • Oxybenzone
  • Avobenzone

But, there are actually 6 ingredients that you should avoid in sunscreen.

Using the right sunscreen

All of that is well and good but another reason you should be using the right sunscreen has to do with making sure you don’t break out.  This is exactly why using a mineral sunscreen is a great option.  For that reason, look for sunscreens that say mineral sunscreen or that include either:  zinc oxide or titanium oxide.  For further info, you can read:  Two best sunscreen ingredients.
