Does sunscreen cause wrinkles

Does sunscreen cause wrinkles?  We all know we should wear sunscreen for UV protection but how can sunscreen cause wrinkles?

Controversial ingredients in sunscreen

It’s been hammered into us that we should wear sun protection if we are going to be out in the sun.  There is some controversy, though, about ingredients that could harm, according to the EWG.  Ingredients like benzene and oxybenzone are potential problems.

This makes it hard to know which sunscreens are good.  Some questions come up like:

  • Are we choosing the right ones?
  • Do we put on enough sunscreen?
  • Does sunscreen cause wrinkles?

Benzene in sunscreen

Let’s first talk about if we are choosing the right sunscreen.  Some of the ingredients in sunscreen are questionable for a few reasons.  Some are cancer causing and some might have you thinking you are getting adequate protection when you’re not.  If you look at the ingredient label and see questionable ingredients, you should stay away.  In fact, there are 6 ingredients in sunscreen to avoid.

One is benzene.  Is benzene in your sunscreen?  Benzene is generally found in spray sunscreens and should be avoided.  This is because sunscreens with benzene could cause blood cancers due to this chemical ingredient.  Therefore, it is best to choose a sunscreen without benzene.  Unfortunately, we like convenience and the ease of use of spray sunscreens are very appealing.  Are you willing to gamble with your health?

The other problem with spray sunscreens is that we may not be putting enough on.  Even though the labels tell you to apply sunscreen before going out in the sun, most people put sunscreen on when they are outside.  When it’s windy, how much of that sunscreen is actually getting on your skin?  And, are you breathing any of that product in?  You most likely are and that can cause a lot of health problems that may not be reversible.

That brings us to the other question:  Does sunscreen cause wrinkles?

Does sunscreen cause wrinkles?

How can sunscreen cause wrinkles?  If you’re in your 40’s or maybe even in your 30’s, you might be more worried about fine lines and wrinkles more than ever.  As we age, our skin loses elasticity.  While there are things you can do to combat this or at least try to slow it down, it is not wise to always be in the sun – especially without adequate protection.  If you’re using any type of sunscreen and not realizing that you are not applying enough, you can be damaging your skin.  You may think you have applied enough but you haven’t and now you’re going into the sun, during the hottest part of the day, thinking you are protected.  Hello, wrinkles!

Be proactive!

I’m hoping that I’ve convinced you somewhat that you should scrutinize sunscreen ingredients.  Not only for your health but also your skin.  If you want to stay youthful, there are easy things you can do.  Here are some suggestions that are easy to implement:

  1. Cover up!  Wear head coverings.  Hats with wide brims are best and they’re stylish, too!  Wear long sleeves and sunglasses that have UV protection.
  2. Stay out of the sun during the hottest part of the day – when the UV rays are the strongest.
  3. Use sunscreen but choose sunscreens with good ingredients.  For more information about how to choose the best sunscreen, click here.
