Stay away from nectarines

It’s August and the perfect season to eat fruit but there is one very good reason to stay away from nectarines if you’re over 40!

Why would I be telling you to stay away from nectarines especially with all the vitamins in them?  It’s true, there are benefits to the juicy summer fruits.  One of the biggest benefits is the amount of Vitamin C that nectarines contains.  According to msn.com, nectarines have over half of your recommended daily intake of this vitamin.  And, we all know that vitamin C is great for our skin.  This is because we can’t make collagen without vitamin C.  If we don’t have collagen, our skin begins to sag and becomes less elastic.

Nectarines also have small amounts of potassium, magnesium and iron.  We need these nutrients, especially as we are getting older.  If you have been suffering from very heavy periods, your body may be starving for them.  As we age, we need to keep our hormones balanced.  For example, magnesium helps for bloating, sensitive breasts, and migraines.  We all know migraines suck!  Plus, magnesium helps to balance our progesterone / estrogen levels – this is especially important if you’re suffering from heavy periods / fibroids.

Why stay away from nectarines?

With all this, why would I tell you to stay away from nectarines?  I mean there is so much you can do with nectarines – eat them raw, make desserts with them and even making drinks.

Well, it’s not all nectarines – just the non-organic or conventional ones.  Nectarines that aren’t organic are part of the Environmental Working Group (EWG) dirty dozen list.  They’re listed as #4 – separate from peaches, which are #9!  What does this all mean?

The EWG’s dirty dozen list is a list of fruits or vegetables that they put out each year.  It is a guide that helps consumers like you and me know which produce has the most pesticides on them.  Pesticides = toxins which can mean hormone disruption.  If you are suffering from ailments that seem to have all of a sudden come on, you may want to take a look at your diet (and your skin care regimen).  These hidden toxins could be part of your problem yet most people don’t know about it.  It sneaks up on us when we hit our 40’s.

In actuality, though, these toxins have been building up in our systems over time.  It’s when we hit our 40’s and are in perimenopause that we happen to notice it.  Skin care, heavy periods, and fatigue become a problem.  One big telltale sign is chin acne.

So, these are the reasons to stay away from nectarines – the non-organic kind.  Be good to your skin and your body and start removing unwanted toxins to live a healthier (and happier) life!
