Is Acne caused by food

I’ve always had oily skin but I often wondered ‘Is Acne caused by food’.  I wasn’t sure so I wanted to figure it out to see if it could help my adult acne.

As I was growing up, I continually struggled with oily skin and acne.  Blackheads on nose and whiteheads were an issue for me as they are with many teenagers – and even adults.  But, I didn’t understand a lot of things as it related to what I put into my body and how it affected my skin.

It made me wonder, “Is Acne caused by food”  Sure, it’s normal to get acne breakouts as a teenager but by adding all the sugar and other junk I was putting into my body, it didn’t help the situation.  Fried foods like french fries is a staple in many teenager’s diets.  Who can blame them?

Years later, when I started researching skin care, I realized that the foods that I was consuming may actually be causing much of my acne.  Have you noticed food sensitivities and acne?  If so, you may need to pay attention to your food allergies and acne symptoms.  Once I stopped those foods, it did actually make a difference.  In addition, I felt better.  But, I also realized there were ways of caring for your skin in other ways that would help too.

Now, I no longer consume all the sugar I used to.  (There could be a sugar and acne connection.)  Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with a treat now and then.  But, now I choose either an organic treat, like an apple, or even nuts or yogurt.  That’s not to say I don’t enjoy other indulgent foods, I just limit my intake and focus on staying healthy both inside and out.

Plus, when I do have an indulgence, I don’t beat myself up for it.  For example, I no longer stress about the delicious treats I may consume not only on my birthday but of those that I love.  Depriving ourselves isn’t good either.  I want to enjoy my life and I want to enjoy the people in my life.  So, celebrating a birthday or Holiday with my family and enjoying the day without having to worry about sugar and calories is how I roll.

What is interesting is that once I’ve decided to pay attention to what I put into my body and although I may still indulge during a celebration, I find that I don’t overindulge.  I enjoy the day, have a treat and move on.  Outside of that, I’m very mindful of the frequency.  It’s a treat, not a meal that you have every day!

But on a regular day, I try to eat strawberry spinach salads with homemade salad dressing (i.e. without chemicals).  These veggies are organic and so delicious and nutritious.  So, is acne caused by food?  Try making some adjustments to your diet and see if it makes a difference like it did for me.
