The truth about GMO food

There is always a good and bad side to everything and that includes GMO foods.  Because of that, it’s hard to know what the best decision for you is.  I’ll break it down here so that you can make your own decisions.  First, we’ll talk about the possible good that GMO food has.  Then, we’ll get into the possible bad.

The good truth about GMO food

The one thing that GMO’s have going for them is that they haven’t been around long enough to show any bad effects or at least nothing has been linked to GMO’s thus far.  That is good because if something were to be bad for us, you’d assume that we would show ill effects quickly.  In addition, they are much cheaper to produce than non-GMO crops.

According to the FDA, GMO’s are safe to eat.  So, why is there such controversy over GMO’s when the Food and Drug Administration say it’s OK?

The controversy is this:

Large chemical companies are the ones who manufactured GMO’s.  These are the guys that are selling those crops so they have a lot to gain from it – and a lot to lose if the general public believes they are bad.  For that reason alone, you might want to stay away from GMO’s.

Another issue that has come up are the weeds that can withstand herbicides.  Stronger weeds mean they are harder to get rid of.  This means that people may be more inclined to use toxic chemicals to get rid of them.  More toxicity, do you see where I’m going with this?

Lastly, since these large chemical companies manufactured genetically modified organisms, they are able to patent them.  Innovation is good but when they are trying to control all the seed, we’re in for some real problems.

My main health concern is the possibility of toxicity.  There was one time in my life that I thought chemical hormones were fine (i.e. the birth control pill).  When I started to have issues with fibroids and unusually heavy bleeding, I realized that those synthetic hormones could be to blame at least in part.  That was 20 years in the making for me so while there isn’t any evidence against GMO’s, I am no longer willing to take the chance.

The bottom line is this:

We don’t know the effects of what GMO’s may contribute to.  It’s up to the consumer to decide what is best for them.  The most important thing is to have all the facts so that you can make an informed decision about the truth about GMO food.  Make the best decision for yourself.
