Why peaches aren’t so peachy

Love peaches?  Me too but I’ll tell you why peaches aren’t so peachy after all!  Certain ones aren’t what they’re cracked up to be!

Summertime!  Farmer’s Markets!  Peaches!  Peaches are so sweet and juicy – especially if you get one just at the perfect ripeness.  Eat it raw / fresh, baked into a pie, or made into a jam.  In fact, I have a delicious peach bourbon jam that I make every August and my family loves it.  When it comes to peaches, we think of summer and hot weather because if you live in the Northern States like I do, peaches will only be in season in the summer, mostly late summer.  It’s always better to buy produce in season not only for availability and price, but also for taste.

Why peaches aren’t so peachy though

As much as we love peaches, peaches may not be so great.  It all depends on if they are organic or not.  The reason why peaches aren’t so peachy is because if they are non-organic, they may be toxic to our health.  The Environmental Working Group (EWG) puts out a ‘Dirty Dozen‘ list each year and peaches come in at #9.  This Dirty Dozen list is a great reference because it tells us which produce contains the greatest number of pesticides and therefore, which we should stay away from.  Peaches, unfortunately, are one of them.   Toxins make us sick.  However, if you choose organic peaches, you are OK to consume these juicy fruits!

Benefits of eating organic peaches

The good news is that there are many benefits of eating organic peaches.  They are packed with Vitamin C and you should all know by now how much I love vitamin C, especially for our skin.  Since Vitamin C helps increase collagen production, this is especially helpful if you are in your forties.  This is because you most likely are in perimenopause and perimenopause can mean the start of sagging skin.  Eating vitamin C that will boost the collagen production can help with your skin being more elastic and looking younger.
