Detox your dryer

Chemicals are all around us and if you’re looking to detox, you’ll also need to think about your laundering habits.  Detox your dryer sheets for a chemical free way of life to help your skin and your hormones!

Your liver

Your liver is the bodies way of filtering out toxins.  It’s an amazing organ because it can even regenerate but when we overload our bodies with toxic substances, it has to work overtime and that can be really problematic.  With the way we eat, the things we put on our bodies and the way we clean, our liver needs a lot of help.  Detoxing your liver is very important.

I’ve dealt with numerous health issues that I didn’t see the connection at first.  I didn’t realize the hormone problems, alongside the bad diet and other environmental toxins, were causing my health issues.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that all your health concerns will be solved by detoxing, but I can tell you that it helped me reverse some issues I was having.

Chemicals in dryer sheets

We use so many different products in the home and it can be overwhelming to think about what to start detoxing.  Dryer sheets are one of those things that I never thought I could live without but when I started having reactions to fragrances, this was the first thing I decided to get rid of.  If you want to know more specific information, this healthline.com article explains more fully what chemicals are in dryer sheets.

What I’m more interested in is to give you the simple and easy recipe I use for homemade dryer sheets!  So, if you’re new to chemical free cleaning or just looking for some more ideas, you’ve come to the right place!  Detox your dryer today to start feeling better!

Homemade dryer sheets:

In order to detox your dryer sheets, you’ll need the following ingredients:

Your homemade dryer sheet:

An old set of flannel sheets – I know you have a set that’s sitting in the back of your closet.  You don’t use them anymore because you found the cutest set last Holiday season so pull out the old and get your scissors!  It’s a great way to repurpose something you’d eventually throw away anyway!  Then, cut them into 3×4 squares.  It’s best to use pinking shears so the edges don’t fray but you don’t have to.  Even better than that is to sew two pieces together – assuming you have a sewing machine and know how to sew.  If it’s something you want to tackle, do the following.  It’s so easy:

Once you have your fabric cut, put right sides together.  Sew all the way around 3 sides then turn right side out.  Tuck the open / unfinished end in and sew this end shut.  Continue sewing around the other 3 sides to complete it.  It does not have to be perfect because no one else but you will see them – unless of course, you want to show off your skills and toxic free way of living!

Chemical free dryer sheet recipe:

Now that you have your fabric ready, you’ll need vinegar and some essential oil.  That’s it!  The essential oil is not necessary but if you’d like a fresh scent, add the oil.  Don’t worry about your clothes smelling like vinegar – I promise you they won’t.  What I will promise is that your clothes will come out VERY soft!!!

Depending on how many ‘sheets’ you have will depend on how much vinegar you use.  I have about 25 dryer sheets so I use 3/4 cup vinegar and 6 drops of lavender essential oil.  And, because I love to repurpose, I took an empty moist wipes dispenser to use for my container.  I did sew mine together so they are a double thickness and I need to use two moist wipe containers.

Folding your wipes

In order for your wipes to pop out the top of your moist wipes container, you’ll need to fold them in a certain way.  It’s super easy.  First take a piece and lay it flat.  Then, take another piece and lay it half way on top of the first piece.  Fold the first one over the 2nd and then lay a 3rd one over the first.  Here’s a picture to help you see what I’m doing:

Lay the 2nd piece half-way over the first.
Fold the exposed bottom piece over the top.

Then just lay another piece over the part you just folded and keep going in this pattern.

Pour your vinegar into the container, add essential oils (if using) and let the fabric soak it up.  In about a half hour, you’ll be ready to use your new chemical free dryer sheets.  As an alternative, you can use a large glass jar (one you can get your hand in and out of easily) and just stuff the sheets in there – no need to fold!!!  Either way, no more chemicals and you’re well on your way to toxic free living!
