How to make natural deodorant
If you’ve been trying to eliminate toxins from your life and deodorant is one of the one’s you’ve been focusing on, you may have realized that non-toxic deodorant can be pricey. Here’s how to make natural deodorant at home for pennies!
Hormone disruptors in skin care
We use a lot of products on our skin and unfortunately, many of those products include toxins. Whether it be aluminum, BPA, propylene glycol or any number of other toxins, we know they are bad for us.

The accumulation of these toxins makes our livers work harder. If the liver gets overloaded, we’ll have issues with toxic liver. It’s at that point that you start thinking about liver detox but generally people do this after a time of not eating very healthfully. Sadly, your liver can become toxic from your skin care products so endocrine disruptors (also known as hormone disruptors) are in skin care. I bet you’re starting to wonder how to make natural deodorant now!
Eliminating toxins
When you know better, you try to do better and part of this process is eliminating the products that contain those toxins. While it would be nice to throw out everything and start fresh, a lot of times that isn’t possible. For one, you’ve spent money on the things you are using and not all of us have the money to just throw away.

This is why I suggest to start somewhere – anywhere. If you’ve chosen deodorant as your first toxic product to make changes, I’m here to help. We can eliminate the toxic deo we’re using by being aware of what is in our store-bought product and choosing another product instead. If the current non-toxic deodorants on the market are cost-effective for your budget, you can make your own deodorant with a few simple ingredients that are easy to find and use.
How to make natural deodorant
Thankfully, making natural deodorant isn’t that hard. Below are several options:

Recipe 1 for natural deodorant
You will need:
- Milk of magnesia (ensure that it only has ingredients of milk and magnesia and possibly water). If it has sodium hypochlorite (this is actually bleach), skip that one and find one that doesn’t have this ingredient
- A spray bottle (with mister) or a roll-on bottle.
Note: The bottles are readily available online. Just do a search and you will find plenty of choice. But, I do suggest you find one without a plastic roller ball (they have stainless steel) since this will be rubbed on your skin. As an alternative, you can use the mister.
Directions:
- This recipe is so easy – all you need to do is put the milk of magnesia in the bottle and use as you would deodorant. It’s very effective. Milk of magnesia is what they used to use for body odor.
Recipe 2 for natural deo
This recipe gives the deodorant just a little bit of fragrance, while allowing the essential oils to help your skin. Note: if your body is sensitive to any oils, use recipe 1 above instead. How to make natural deodorant with fragrance, you will need:
- 1/4 cup Milk of magnesia (again, ensure that it does not have sodium hypochlorite in it)
- Essential oils such as tea tree or lavender
- 1/2 Tbsp Arrowroot powder (alternatively, you can use corn starch but if you go this route, make sure that it is organic and non-GMO)
- Mister spray bottle or roll-on bottle.

Hint: grow your own lavender!
Directions:
- Pour the milk of magnesia in a bottle and add a few drops of each essential oil.
- Add the arrowroot powder and shake well. (You can also put the arrowroot powder on separately with a make-up brush.)
Recipe 3 for au natural deodorant
