Sauerkraut for gut health

I never really used to be a fan of sauerkraut, especially not the real vinegary kind.  I did eat sauerkraut, but mainly in cooked meals and I would never eat it fresh.  But, I learned that sauerkraut has some real benefits and I wanted to share with you what happened when I ate sauerkraut.  First, let’s go over what sauerkraut is and how it can help your gut.

Sauerkraut is packed with fiber, vitamins and minerals.  It has the good bacteria – the probiotics – that help your gut / digestive system.  You can help avoid problems like leaky gut by eating this fermented food.  According to healthline.com you can eat it everyday, if you’d like.

This is what made me wonder if I should eat sauerkraut more often.  I would occasionally be constipated so I thought I could use more fiber and probiotics in my diet.  So, what happened when I ate sauerkraut?

Strangely, my constipation stopped.  I was able to go to the bathroom easily and I never felt bloated.  It was amazing.  If you’ve ever dealt with constipation, it’s terrible.  If you’ve ever dealt with not being able to completely eliminate, that’s not so good either.  But, when I ate sauerkraut, this stopped being a problem – instantly.  This meant that I felt great all day.  It seemed too good to be true or that it was a miracle.

The thing is that sauerkraut not only has vitamins and minerals, but because it’s a fermented food, it has probiotics and those are great for your health.  Sauerkraut is anti-inflammatory and an antioxidant and we know how good that is for our health and digestion.

If you’re considering trying it, I would suggest starting by eating only about a spoonful a day and work your way up from there.  If you don’t want to eat it all the time, just do it a couple times a week or whenever you are feeling constipated.  Believe me, you’ll feel better.  It is better than taking a laxative!

All these benefits – as opposed to what happened when I ate a cookie.

Fermented foods for skin health

Fermented foods also help with your skin.  Since it is anti-inflammatory, it can help your acne.  Acne is inflammation so healing from within can help your acne.  It’s amazing how the right foods can help you look and feel better.

One thing I should mention, though, is that you should stay away from the pasteurized sauerkraut.  I didn’t realize this but you need fresh sauerkraut – that means that if it’s been canned (or jarred), it went through a heating process.  Heat kills the good bacteria.  Instead, look for fresh sauerkraut in a bag.  It is pricier but it is so worth it.

Wouldn’t you rather spend the money on good food that will help your skin and your gut – as opposed to spending it on the back end by buying extra skin care ingredients and laxatives to fix a problem that could be prevented?  Spend your money wisely.
