Antiaging SPF skin care

Think you don’t need sunscreen all year round?  Think again because you definitely need antiaging SPF skin care as you turn 30 and beyond.

What is UV?

Ultraviolet Radiation, or UV, is exactly that:  radiation.  It can cause cancer because of what it does to our skin when it penetrates the layers.  There is UVA and UVB and there is a difference.

The A in UVA is for the long wave aging rays which go very deep into the skin.  It can cause cancer and premature aging because it disrupts the collagen in our skin.  The B in UVB stands for burning; these are short waves.  Next, we’ll go into Antiaging SPF skin care.

Antiaging SPF skin care

UV rays can damage your collagen and elastin which can lead to premature aging, including wrinkles, fine lines, sunspots and skin cancer.  Participating in antiaging SPF skin care can help your skin to stay younger longer and to help prevent cancer.

There are both chemical and physical sunscreens that you can use.  I don’t recommend chemical sunscreens.  Many have ingredients that you don’t want (or shouldn’t put on your skin).  They can disrupt hormones because of the PABA (or other hormone disruptors they contain).

A much better alternative are the physical sunscreens.  Many of these say ‘mineral’ sunscreens and they will contain one or both of these ingredients:

  • Titanium Dioxide
  • Zinc Oxide

Use the right sunscreen so that you have protection against both UVA and UVB rays.  Look for a brood spectrum meaning that it protects against both of those rays.  And always use a sunscreen – no matter what time of day or year.  Even if you think you don’t need it at 4 PM, you still should wear it.  Or, don’t think you don’t need it if it’s cloudy out.  Every time you wear sunscreen you help keep away those fine lines / wrinkles or sunspots, and of course, cancer.

Also remember to:

  1. Apply every couple of hours unless you’ve been sweating or swimming.  In that case, apply every hour.
  2. Wear sunglasses – good ones – ones that block those rays and not those cute ones you got at a department store.
  3. Wear wide brim hats and SPF clothing.
  4. Make sure you apply sunscreen to your hands, chest, ears, neck, shoulders and even your lips (use an SPF lip balm).
