My Beginners Guide to Skin Care

My beginners guide to skin care started because of my own skin issues growing up.  Into my 40’s, my skin has changed & I’ve had to change with it.

The early years

When I was a teenager, I was a lot like other teens who struggled with acne prone skin.  Hormones are raging and that means that your skin can have a mind of its own.  I’d get blackheads on my nose and pimples around my hairline, cheeks, and forehead.  I even struggled with body acne (also known as ‘bacne‘).  So frustrating!  It didn’t matter that other people around me (i.e. my friends and schoolmates) also had acne breakouts – I felt like I was the only one.

The middle years

When I hit my mid 20’s, the acne seemed to not be as big of a problem, especially as compared to when I was a teenager.  It was still there but just not as bad.  My biggest problem was my sensitive skin.  The products I was buying caused my skin to become irritated and red.  I’d try all sorts of things:  drug store products vs. more expensive department store products.  My skin would turn red and sometimes that meant a breakout.

After dealing with acne growing up, thinking that I outgrew it, then having issues with sensitive skin (along with my already oily skin) – I had enough.  That’s when I started to make my own skin care products.  You can read more about Nutt So Ruff and how we started here.  This is what ultimately led my beginners guide to skin care.

Into my Forties

I, then, struggled with hormonal issues into my thirties and forties.  That was fun – (not!).  Between learning about endocrine disruptors, perimenopause, and pore clogging ingredients – I realized that you have to constantly re-evaluate and adjust your skin care regimen – but there are some basic things you should know.  That’s when I figured out my beginners guide to skin care.

When I say basic, I mean fundamental.  It’s so simple that sometimes we forget to go back to the fundamentals to make things work the way that they should.  So, my beginners guide to skin care includes the following:

  1. Drink plenty of water.  Drinking clean water helps to flush out toxins.
  2. Eat healthy foods – this includes fresh fruits and vegetables.  Raw food eating is the best.
  3. Wash your face twice a day with a simple cleanser.  You don’t want to strip away the natural oils of your skin but you do want to remove dirt and oil.
  4. Exfoliate according to your skin type.  We recommend using your Nutt So Ruff face scrub bar.
  5. Practice good sleep hygiene habits.  This will help your mental, emotional, and physical state which will help you keep wrinkles away as well as depression.
  6. Exercise!  Get moving – it’s important for your body to move so get out there and get some physical activity happening.  Also, don’t forget to stretch to keep injuries away.

There you go – my beginners guide to skin care.  Enjoy and be happy with beautiful skin.
