Signs you need Hormone Replacement Therapy

The other day, we talked about the hormonally challenged.  Do you know the signs you need Hormone replacement therapy?  I joke but if your hormones are going haywire and you’re in your 40’s, you know how emotionally painful this can be.  You almost feel like you are losing your mind.  It gives us anxiety, which gives us a whole set of other problems.  But, I don’t want you to feel alone.  Below are some signs you need Hormone Replacement Therapy.

Hormone symptom checklist

  • You feel a brain fog hormone imbalance.
  • You get itchy skin at night.  Weird, right?
  • You may experience weight gain.  Ugh!
  • Headaches and Migraines happen frequently.  So debilitating.
  • Mood swings – you feel good one minute, the next minute you’re irritable.  Annoying!
  • You suffered from acne as a teenager and now you are getting breakouts again.  What the heck?
  • Sleep disturbances* – and this doesn’t help with the mood swings when you’re tired.
  • I would also add crying to this list.  You may notice that you want to cry more than usual and I think this is because of the frustration of how you are feeling.  Please know that it is OK to cry and it may actually help.  Nothing you are going through is abnormal but sometimes we may need a little help getting through it.

The above are all signs you need hormone replacement therapy.

Here is what helped me when I started my journey:

I started talking.  I talked to other women in their forties.  I talked to my significant other.  I even talked to my Mom.  Talking to people I trusted really helped me to feel like I wasn’t alone.  And, being alone is the last thing we need.  When I realized that what I was experiencing was not unusual and that something could be done about it, I started to feel better.  Why?  Because then I knew that I had some control over it.

I made an appointment with my doctor.  She put me on hormone replacement therapy and told me it was very common for women in their 40’s.  Many women in this age group start perimenopause.  Perimenopause is a transition period for your body.  It begins a few years before the actual onset of menopause and it can last less than a year to about a decade.

Symptoms of Perimenopause:

Following are some symptoms of perimenopause.  How many do you recognize in yourself?

  • Irregular periods – including either lighter periods or very heavy.
  • Hot flashes
  • Night sweats
  • Weight gain
  • Mood swings

Do you see a pattern?  Once I started the hormone replacement therapy, it took a few months for my body to normalize again.  The first 6 months were brutal but, luckily, I had a good support system.  This is very important.  The last thing we need is to go at this all alone.

Patience and Compassion for your Hormone Replacement Journey

The last thing I want to convey to you is to be patient with yourself.  Just as you would give a friend compassion that is going through a tough time, so should you give yourself compassion.  Everything you are going through is normal.  It may not feel good at the time but take my advice as we have a lot in common.  I wish you good luck in hormone challenges.  I promise you, you will get through it.  Notice the signs you need hormone replacement therapy and you’ll be feeling better in no time.
