Coral Friendly Sunscreen
School may be back in session but there are still many of us going on vacation so it’s good to know the coral friendly sunscreen options available.
Extended summer vacation
I know several people that didn’t travel during the summer break with their kids. Instead, they opted to go on vacation after school started. For whatever reasons they had for delaying a vacation and taking their kids out of school, who doesn’t love an end of summer bang by taking a trip to a warm, sunny spot. And, if you don’t have kids but you’re looking to do the same, you generally do this because the vacation destinations will be less crowded once all the kids are back in school.

Whatever your situation, extending your summer vacation doesn’t mean that you can forget about the sunscreen. And, a coral friendly sunscreen is a smart choice, especially for the environment. Let’s find a sunscreen that is safe for coral.
Why choose a Coral Safe sunscreen?
As consumers, we have the option to buy chemical sunscreens and mineral sunscreens. While either can do the job of blocking harmful UV rays, some do it better than others. In fact, there are 6 ingredients in sunscreen to avoid because they are considered to be harmful to our hormones. These hormone disruptors can cause a lot of problems in our bodies, including heavy periods, acne, and migraines.

An added benefit to choosing a sunscreen with better ingredients is that it is better for the environment. Chemical sunscreens are known to hurt the coral in our oceans. According to cnet.com, coral reef sunscreens need to be free of oxybenzone, octinoxate, or octocrylene AND be non-nano – meaning that the particle size should be over 100 nanometers. If the particle size is smaller than 100 nanometers, the coral reefs can soak up the sunscreen and really hurt them – this includes killing them.
