How often should you wash your face

Washing your face is key if you want to have good skin.  How often should you wash your face, though?  The answer is simple.

In times past

When we wash our face, we might think that it needs to feel squeaky clean, tight, and even tingly.  There is still that product on the market today that gave us that tingly feeling, right?  Who hasn’t used that?  I know I have and probably from about age 14-16, I used it off and on.

I’d wash in the morning before school, once again when I got home from school, and then again in the evening before bed.  I felt it was the only way to get rid of the pimples and oil that were on my face.  It didn’t work but it ‘felt’ like it was.

Change

Things are changing and changing big.  The major reason we need to wash our faces is to get rid of dirt from environmental toxins, oil that our skin produces naturally and other stuff – such as from the makeup we applied.  Generally speaking, the dirtiest your face will be is at night.  You’ve woken up, put makeup on, and went about your day perhaps outside or maybe you spent some time in the train station.  Either way, your face was exposed to many things, including pollution.  So, by the time you got home, your face was dirty.  This begs the question:  How often should you wash your face?

How often should you wash your face – Washing frequency

Do you really need to wash your face in the morning?  The answer is a little more involved.

Some people have really oily skin, and it would benefit those people to do a light wash because you don’t want to contribute to pimples and acne.  You don’t need to clean too harshly (actually, you never should) but you get what I’m trying to say.  In general, no matter what type of skin you have, a light cleaning feels good.

You just don’t want to wash too hard.  You don’t need to get that squeaky clean feeling because that means you’ve stripped the oil from your skin.  This will, in turn, cause you to produce more oil.

If you have dry skin, you could skip a morning wash but remember that moisturizer is always best applied after cleansing and while skin is still slightly damp.

Nighttime washing

The most important time to wash your face is in the evening.  Anytime you go to clean your skin, gentle is key.  It’s not necessary to use a product that “tingles”.  All you need to do is use something to get rid of the dirt and oil.  The kinder you are to your skin, the more your skin will look and feel better.

Bottom line

You don’t want to remove the oils that your skin normally produces on its own.  Keep your skin healthy.  If you lose these oils, you will just produce more and you will feel oilier, which can cause more pimples.  The trick is to clean lightly so you aren’t drying yourself out.

So, instead of reaching for that tingly cream, go simple.  Always use lukewarm water with your cleanser and you’ll quickly notice that your skin doesn’t have to tingle to look great!  I guarantee you’ll notice a difference in the look and feel of your skin.  Give it a try.
