4 Superfoods to try Today
Superfoods are all the rage. Here are 4 superfoods to try today because they’re not only delicious but so good for you. These are the ones I love!
What is a Superfood?
A superfood is a food that is so high in nutrients that it is very good for your health and possibly your longevity. Because of all the nutrients in the superfood, your body can stay healthier and possibly help fight off infection better vs. if you eat junk food. So, below are the 4 superfoods to try today!

4 Superfoods to try Today!
There are more than 4 superfoods, but these are the ones that I especially love. They’re tasty and can be used in different ways. So, here goes – these are the 4 superfoods to try today that I recommend:
- Goji berries
- Cacao
- Spirulina
- Bee pollen
Let’s go into each one…
Goji Berries as a Superfood
If you’ve never had a goji berry or even seen one, they are the smallest little fruit. They’re sweet and so delicious. Some people say that they taste a little like cranberries. I can see why; however, I’m not a huge fan of cranberries yet I LOVE goji berries. You can use them in baking like you do raisins or even in savory dishes. Plus, you can eat them raw – even putting them in smoothies.

Some of the benefits, other than all the vitamins and minerals, of goji berries are better sleep and weight loss. Plus, it can help your immune system and it has a ton of antioxidants! Did you also know you can grow your own goji berries? See 5 Benefits of Goji Berries for Women.
Growing your own goji berries
Goji berries are becoming so popular that you can now easily find goji berries plants for your yard. A few years ago, I purchased a goji berry plant and quickly planted it in the yard. It was a tiny little plant when I bought it. (I bought it from a local hardware store.) I planted it in the ground, but it didn’t look like much. Through the season, it grew larger and larger. I even moved it a few times because I realized I had planted it too close to my raspberry bushes.
By the following year, my goji berry was a nice bush. It was so prolific and came with a ton of goji berries. I was a little shocked to find that the fresh goji’s don’t taste much like the dried. In fact, they taste a little like tomatoes! I prefer them dried so I get out my dehydrated and dry them myself. This is a huge money saver because goji berries are a bit pricey.

Cacao as one of the 4 Superfoods to try today
Not cocoa, cacao! They come in nibs or powder. According to Healthline.com, Cacao nibs almost look like chocolate chips – they are actually crushed cacao beans but have a slight bitter flavor. They do taste a bit like chocolate because they are from the cocoa bean but they are different because they are raw so it may not be the chocolate you’re used to! There are a ton of nutrients in cacao, including fiber, protein, magnesium, zinc, manganese and copper. They’re very low in sugar too! And, since they’re a superfood, they also contain antioxidants.

One of my favorite ways to use cacao nibs is in a smoothie! All you need is:
- Milk (you can use regular cow’s milk or almond milk) – 1 cup
- Cacao nibs – a handful
- Banana – one whole, peeled, ripe banana
Put it in a blender and pulse a few times. It’s that simple to make a superfood smoothie using cacao nibs! I love this one because it tastes like a chocolate covered banana.
Spirulina
By now, you may have heard of spirulina. It has many health benefits for women. Spirulina is a kind of blue-green algae that has all of these great ‘features’:
- Protein
- Vitamins and minerals
- Antioxidants
- Carotenoids
You can take it in supplement form or in powder form. The good thing about supplements is that you can take it in the morning so it’s an easy thing to do at breakfast time and to get you ready for the day.
But powder form is also an option if you want to put this in your smoothie. It will turn your smoothie into this blue green color and it can overpower the taste. If you’re already used to the taste of spirulina, you won’t mind the taste. It may take some getting used to but if you’re a health food junkie already, you won’t have any problems. If you’re still getting to that stage, I’d suggest supplement form for now.

Bee Pollen
Ah, the bee! They provide so much for us…honey, royal jelly, and bee pollen. We’ve all had honey, I am sure. But, bee pollen and royal jelly may not have been anything you’ve tried yet. Bee pollen (and royal jelly) can get pricey – I mean anything honey bee related is pricey because it does take time and money to raise honey bees. But, the benefits are amazing, especially for women over 40. Not only can pollen help with inflammation but also you’re liver. Can you say liver detox? An added benefit, especially for women in their 40’s, is helping with symptoms of perimenopause and menopause.

Other Superfoods
Obviously, there are many other superfoods than the 4 superfoods to try today, but these are my suggestions to start with. In later posts, I’ll talk about coconuts, chia seeds, aloe vera and others. So, stop back!
