How common is adult acne

Your an adult and you have acne but how common is adult acne?  It’s frustrating to get acne at any age but getting it as an adult is just wrong!

Adult acne

Any time you get acne it’s frustrating.  Acne, no matter the age, can be caused by clogged pores, hormonal changes, and even inflammation because of your diet.

Clogged pores

Clogged pores is a major contributor to acne.  Lots of things can clog your pores.  Here are just a few:

  • Make-up – wearing a lot of makeup can really exacerbate acne.  One of the reasons is that the cosmetics you are using may have pore clogging ingredients in them.  If you don’t watch, you may be inadvertently causing your own acne problems.  You can check out my list of pore clogging ingredients to help you.  Stay away from the products that contain them.
  • Dead skin cells – our skin sloughs off naturally; however, it doesn’t always do such a good job.  If these dead skin cells stay on our skin, it can lead to acne breakouts.
  • Sweating – excessive sweat from exercising can clog pores, causing more acne.  After a workout, it’s best to rinse off (only with water).

Hormonal changes

Just like when we were teenagers, our hormones fluctuate into adulthood and can cause acne.  For this reason, it can cause our acne to flare up.  But, it’s not only hormones due to our menstrual cycle.  It could also be from stress.

Inflammation

Depending on what you’re eating, foods can cause inflammation.  It isn’t necessarily the chocolate or the milk that is causing the acne – it’s the inflammation it’s doing inside that is causing the acne.  Some people don’t have any problems with certain foods; whereas others do.  But, eating a healthy diet can help reduce inflammation and help calm acne.

How common is adult acne?

So, how common is adult acne?  According to the American Academy of Dermatology, it isn’t uncommon and for a lot of the same reasons as we’ve already talked about.  Hormones can be a major contributing factor, though.  As we age and get closer to menopause (like, if you’re in your forties), your hormones can really get out of whack.  Knowing this and balancing your hormones by eating a healthy diet and adhering to a proper skin care regimen can really help those of us who suffer from adult acne.

What can you do?

So, what can you do?  Obviously, a healthy diet that includes lots of vegetable can help with the inflammation that is causing acne.  On top of that, it’s really helpful to exfoliate your skin.  If your skin is oily, you’ll find that exfoliating a few times a week can help keep your pores from being clogged.  And, no more of those washes or toners that strip your skin of oil.  When you use these types of products, you are just asking your skin to produce more.
